Saw a two-toned wing standard Chernobyl somewhere on the interweb and thought that looked interesting but they used white on top of grey as an indicator and white often disappears on foamy stonefly water and grey Skwala days so I opted for orange. In hindsight, a foam indicator on the head would have been easier but that’s what playing around on the vise is for.

hook - WFC Model 6 #8
thread - Uni 6/0 camel
tail(?) - Krystal Flash black
body - Ice Dub brown
overbody- 2mm foam brown
wing(s) - Congo Hair baitfish grey
indicator - Parapost yarn hot orange
legs - medium rubber brown
collar/head - deer hair dyed brown

I really like the concept here, but this needs improvement. I ordered some jelly cord from amazon in .7mm. This diameter is likely fine for larger flies, but too big for this size. I have .3mm and .4mm on the way now. Anyways, the idea is to add gills and have a nice segmented body. I really like the looks, but this one is a little steep (i.e. I took it too far up/down the hook shank), body too thick as mentioned, and the gills turned out a little messy.

I've also tried this with latex, bug flesh, and a synthetic quill. The latex actually turned out really nice, but would be better for a clinger nymph...body gets to thick. I do like that you can make it two toned thpugh, by coloring the top of the body with sharpies. Bug flesh initially looks awesome, but is also too thick, and it's kind of "slippery", so the gills move around a bit and end up getting kind of sucked back under so they are barely visible. The synthetic quill is great, but needs to be costed in UV resin for durability and to kind of magnify the segmentation of the body. Problem there is the resin inevitably ends up in the gills, and makes then both stiff and clumpy.

So, I'm hoping the smaller diameter jelly cord is what I'm looking for...

Here is the swimming nymph with the .7mm jelly cord. Looks kind of like a scorpion...if the smaller diameter jelly cord works I might call this "scorpion style".

Well, Norms still posting on what's in your vise at wff.. I guess I was wrong!

The gallows tool has been sitting on the sidelines for a while so I though it time to put it to use. Originally, I left the Congo Hair long to represent an egg sac but didn’t like the look on this fly so I trimmed it off.

hook - WFC Model 28 #10
thread - Uni 6/0 camel
core - 20lb mono
underbody - Congo Hair black
body - 1mm foam brown
wing - Congo Hair baitfish grey

I messed up on the head - not exactly what I was aiming for.
yeah, I'd either cut the head off and re-do or if there's room, throw a dubbed head in front of that. Unless you're not looking to push quite as much water and have it be more of a glide vs. jerk action.

Did you use the backside of the bucktail for the head there? I've found myself using that more and more because it's so hollow and flairs so well, it's great to add that bulk underneath my dubbed heads. I'm not good enough of a tyer to make good heads that behave as intended with just the bucktail.

Here are the other 2 I described earlier.

Body ends up too fat on this one for a swimming nymph. Like I said before, this might be great on a straight shank hook for a clinger nymph. I also like how you can color the top of the body with a sharpie so you get the two tone effect. And, it's wide enough I was able to precisely apply UV resin without it getting in the gills.

I actually like this one a lot, but the main problem is the resin gets in the gills. The body is perfect width/diameter, but thats the problem when applying the resin, it's impossible to keep it out of the gills.

I like this a lot, but as I mentioned, the gills kind of get sucked back in to the body, and likely 16 is the smallest size you could tie with still getting segmentation, and not having too fat of a body.

Anyways, thought I would follow up with my previous post. 0.4mm jelly cord arrives tomorrow, so I'll try again. 0.3mm arrives next Tuesday.

Do they still make Larva Lace? Micro and/or Midge sizes would work good here.
