You could even color the bottom half of the extended foam with a sharpie to make an egg sac. That thing'll float! Sweet tie!

Working with some of that nightmare dubbing
Great stuff:

I have a foam disc inside and the fly will fish just over 7”. Also has some long black hair- polar goat. From the North Pole I believe.
hell yeah! I literally just tied up that looks almost identical (maybe an inch longer). The flies I had tied up earlier with a silicone head just didn't swim right but the one I had tied that way but didn't coat the head danced and darted all over the damn place. Maybe I just didn't get it smooth enough, regardless, I'm not sure why I should make that big of a change from something that was working.

super buggy smallie snack in crawfish-ish colors.

back to the basics, because as @Dr. Magill says, "if it ain't broke..."

yet I still had to tinker with foam placement and subtle head construction & color.

You’re a funny guy @clarkman
Those flies have been good producers for you. I’m taking the big stick out this week to swim some of my stuff and work on the double haul. Really anxious to see some these ladies work. I wished I lived closer to the Tiger pond

Lol. I also tied up another sucker colored pattern this morning....no goop. I've gotta play around with that stuff a bit more.

How far are you from Tapps & Mayfield?

Found this little gem…

I have been using this fly for largemouths for a couple of years. About 6" long

Hook: B10S #1
Tail Arctic Fox, black ostrich and Angel Hair
Underbody: 1 inch piece of large Raney's float foam midway on the shank
Body: black/purple Angel Hair over purple ostrich spun in a loop
head: Monster dubbing
Eyes 8 mm

The head is coated with liquid fusion which gives a very similar result to silicone. I use this to make the fly float. It floats for a good while before getting saturated. This makes this a sort of quiet, swimming surface fly. The liquid fusion is easier to work with than silicone IMO and the bottle keeps it usable better than silicone in a tube. The flexible liquid fusion also makes this a fairly weed resistant fly that is also a good hooker of fish.

I’m 80 miles north of Tapps
160 miles north of Mayfield.
In my earlier years I wouldn’t think twice about heading to either one.
I’m aging and I will admit - it can suck
