PNW Flood Watch - Dec 8-12, 2025

My bank on the lower Yak just crested. I normally need a 6 ft ladder to get down to the water. We are still a few days from our peak (Saturday), when we are just touching a major flood level. Still probably not like 2009 when two thirds of my property was under water. Reminiscing with my neighbor today. I was chasing after carp that were stranded in my horse pasture. His boys set up goose decoys and a blind. :sneaky: Lemonade......

I have a buddy that lives in North Bend in the neighborhood south of exit 32. He's been on the road from Renton since 2pm. He ended up stuck in traffic on Snoqualmie Ridge Parkway, trying to get down to old-town Snoqualmie. No go there so he (and everyone else) got turned around and headed back up to the ridge. Not sure if he stopped and had dinner or not, but as of 10pm, his new goal is to get off the ridge onto I90 east to the casino exit, and go thru North Bend all the way out to truck town (exit 34), get on WB I90 and then take his exit 32 to get home. The goal is midnight. Crazy man.
My brother-in-law also lives in North Bend. He picked up their daughter at Sea-Tac and realized they weren't going to make it home. She has ankle surgery at 8:30am tomorrow in friggin Northgate area so he just booked a hotel up there. His wife is staying with her folks in the neighborhood up by trunk town, close to the Middle Fork, but 3 or 4 blocks away...and more importantly, up, from the river.

The slides are going to start happening now. Be safe out there. Don't drive unless you absolutely have to!

Going to fill up some water cans this morning. All it will take is a road washout with a waterline in it to contaminate the whole supply.
The forecast is still above the record but lower by several feet for tomorrow.

So here is a portion of the official Skagit County 100 year flood plain map. Yellow denotes the areas of flood danger.
What I circled in red is the hill that I live on.

Might need to deploy the official PNWFF helicopter to extract you? Good news that the projected Skagit crest has been dialed down.

I was tempted to do some flood peeping yesterday, but then decided the roads should stay clear for emergency responders and people who need them, not me. I also don’t have four hours of spare time but I do appreciate the power of rivers.

You aren't missing anything. These events always remind me of how I chose the location of my headquarters. Our river valleys become an ugly mess this time of year. Fun to visit, but never live there.

I’d love to see any waterfall right now, and just seeing in person where all the water goes and how fast or slow it’s moving is actually really informative.

Best of luck to all of those in the flood zone, went through it several times during atmospheric river conditions when we lived coastside with the road out of town closed from flooding and trees down.
Meanwhile, not
a whiff of snow here in the Cascades, this the temp when I got off the river yesterday. The businesses/employees who make a living off of snow season setting seriously worried with a two week forecast of temps remaining in the mid 50's/40's.

This.

Pictures/videos mostly do it for me for the general "here's what the river looks like" in flood situations. But for some reason a fully cranking waterfall is deeply fascinating to see/hear in person.

KOMO said it was 72 degrees in Yakima yesterday! So crazy. Glad it's cooler today!
