Does anyone recall a prior flood event that caused this many road washouts? Hwy 2, I-90, and Hwy 12 are the major cross state routes. And I don't know how many state and county roads. Seems like this storm has set a record. That and levee breaches on both the Green and White Rivers. That ain't happened in a while.
I believe it was the winter of 1996-1997.

We flying to Baja over Christmas.

Every pass road was closed for several days. The only way to get to western Washington was through I-84. Wenatchee had four feet of snow on the ground and my roof as well. Western Washington was flooding and the flights between Wenatchee and Sea-Tac were shut down for several days.

We ended up driving south heading for Satus Pass when it was announced that 12 had just opened. We ran into a air force lady that was moving to Ft. Lewis-McCord with her pet parrot in the rear seat. She had not driven in snow. It was a fun drive over the pass and then we hit the flooding in western Washington. Everybody, including the parrot made it to their destination.

We flew out of Sea-Tac the next morning. Baja was perfect.

I don't know if I prefer when the power goes out, but I do appreciate a little bit of time off the grid. Firing up the grill, burning some candles, it's nice to take a step back in time for a day or even a few hours.

Normally I'd agree. Now that we're on well water, not so much. At least until I get a separate generator set up at the pump house (project #367).

This is how you do high water kayaking and rafting! Still dangerous, but at least no giant trees in the water and you have skilled buddies to help try and save your ass.
Cool thing about this one is I grew up fishing this whole run. And, it's only runnable like this during major flood events.
The 16' falls in this stretch is a super cool spot. Pretty sure the 2 or 3 fish that broke my 3# Max back in the day were steelhead. I never saw them, but my buddy has seen steelhead try and jump them. Most fisheries folks agree that the falls are impassible to steelhead & salmon. I would fully agree at regular flow. In this???? who knows. I never saw any above it and it was my 2nd home for much of my youth.

What’s generally kept in the fanny packs? ( Like the two in the yellow raft). Rescue/throw rope?

Wild ride, it amazing the cameras didn't get ripped off on some of those limb encounters.

The water on the Skagit was finally low enough to try fishing/exploring some of the spots, still too high for lots of good access though. Lots of trees lodged in new places (like tree trees, not just logs). One creek mouth I fish quite a bit has completely shifted its channel, it looks like a glacier moved through and dropped a moraine with all the loose stones that are in the forest. Saw a couple places where there used to be islands that just aren't there anymore. The big artificial log jam is nowhere near how it I remembered it, lots of moving water through there, plus 20 there looks a little sus now.

That said, I verified that there's still fish:
