Steelhead Fly

Hook - Gamakatsu T10-6H

Thread - Red or black

Tag - Flat gold tinsel

Tail - Orange hackle fibers with white over (bucktail can also be used)

Rib - Oval gold tinsel

Body - Rear 1/2 orange dubbing, front red dubbing

Hackle - Dark brown

Wing - Orange over white bucktail or polar bear

Cheeks - Jungle Cock (Optional)

This fly pattern was originated by Enos Bradner for the Stillaguamish River in Washington around 1937 and is still a popular fly for summer and winter steelhead.

This actually started out as a Dunkeld variation but I got distracted by some claret hackle and ended up here, instead.

hook - WFC Model 6 #10
thread - Uni 8/0 fire orange
tail - yarn sunburst
rib - small wire gold
body - Starburst dubbing gold
body hackles - claret (1 Tbs Rit Wine/1 cup water)/hot orange
shoulder - pheasant rump dyed orange (1 Tbs Rit Sunshine Orange/1 cup water)
collar/head - deer hair dyed claret

This started out as a split wing something-or-other using a hen pheasant body feather but that went nowhere, so I said screw it and spun a muddler head.

hook - WFC Model 6 #10

Little 10" Fall/winter pattern...

4/0 TP605 with 2 35mm shanks behind to provide more to the body (and with some added weight to slam into the front to assist with the jacknife). Titan dub for the head. I really like going with the lighter color on top for these black patterns as it really helps with my own visibility. With my more natural color patterns, I stick with the more natural darker up top, lighter belly since with those I'm actually more or less trying to mimic something that swims in the waters...
