What have you done for your boat lately?

I sorta' hate to be nit picky, but those aren't oars. They are beautiful canoe paddles. They deserve to be called paddles. Nice work!
Thanks for the kind words. I grew up with rowboats and drift boats as the only paddle craft, so despite kayaking a lot in adulthood sometimes I slip up. For some reason in my brain, perhaps because this is my first canoe, kayaks use paddles and everything else is an oar. I appreciate the correction—words matter.

Wow, you guys all do beautiful work. For something less beautiful, I rednecked a stripping mat for the front deck of my drifter. Cuts way down on tangles.

I love this! I may have to try something similar for my fly fishing scow...

Started in on the matching accessories.IMG_0305.jpegIMG_2870.jpeg

Edit: Experimentations with epoxy to make a vise board to stay on theme and also see if the boat's net needs epoxy work.

Steam bent, or just laminated?
Milled down some strips leftover from the canoe then heat bent them into shape. Too long for the steam box made for the stems of the canoe, and too long to soak in the bathtub.

The next step is to figure out handle length (I’m thinking 72” overall including the 16x24.75" hoop) and dry fit everything. Then shape the handle, glue/epoxy it all together, add inner and outer net stringing grooves and holes, add fiberglass to the hoop, oil the handle, string the net, and stick a salmon in it.

Changing the impeller for some reason.
IMG_4614.jpeg

Took it out the other day and after several hours basically at idle speed it over heated. This is an old used 15hp I’ve just started using and tinkering around with. Been running well overall. Figured I might as well finally change lower gear case oil and grab an impeller just in case it needed it when I got in there. It did. And the oil was gnarly so fresh stuff should be helpful. Now I just have to work out and replace the couple of sheared off bolts for the gear case housing and it will be back on the water eventually. Probably not tomorrow morning like I hoped…

All around awesome guy @Phil K came over today and we (well mostly he) took every wood and leather piece out, cleaned and oiled them, scrubbed the inside of the boat, and put it all back together. It was a 20-year tune up for my dory, and that boat was thirsty!

Thanks, @Phil K !
