Man, by the way you two communicate and bounce ideas off each other, I would’ve guessed you were old fishing buddies. I guess this is the cool side of the Internet :)
Well, we DID have a blind date on Mayfield with Mike Sturza a couple of years ago...🤣

Tied in this size to use as a short-wing stonefly so this should actually be called a Stonehog. Again, added a strip of foam on the top of the body for a bit more buoyancy because I plan to fish this in pretty rough water.

hook - WFC Model 6 #8
thread - Uni 6/0 tan
body - Starburst dubbing tan
overbody/head - 2mm foam tan
wing(s) - deer hair
hackle - pheasant rump

I can definitely envision a salmonfly tied in that fashion! Nice work!

Took @joefromchicago advice, and grabbed some midge sized tubing in gray to try out. I actually ended up tying this style for my Green River box (heading to Utah on May 11). 4 each in size 18 and 20 U205. It was a little quicker than the "scorpion" style. Really has a nice slim profile too.

I did get the 0.4mm jelly cord from Amazon, and really liked that for the "scorpion" style. I actually am not sure why I didn't choose this for my box, I think I like it a little better. The gray tubing is a little darker than I wanted, and as desired, the clear jelly cord let's the thread color show through so you can change the body color based on your thread/gill choice.

Holy cow - those things look like they're about to dart off into the current!
Wow.

Could you leave a link to the Amazon jelly cord? I tried looking it up but there were so many different options! Fantastic flies by the way!

Thanks for the comment!

Also, those gills are pretty thick. I'm thinking body quill would actually be better for gills on a swimming mayfly. I am using Iris Thread. Both products are from Veevus (which can be purchased from most dly tying stores/websites).

Nice flies! Where do you buy the tab eyes?
I saw them in a different pattern video, so made my own with plastic and super glue and normal eyes. The advantage is that you can easily tie them in very securely and don’t have to worry about gluing them to the materials.

Caddisflyshop.com sells the real deal as does madriveroutfitters.com.
