Tuna 2024

I really enjoy this thread even though I have zero desire to catch one on a fly rod. We are now entirely grocery focused and have evolved/reverted to hand lines. At 67, I'm the youngest on our crew by a long shot and after 25 or so years of chasing West Coast albacore, we just enjoy being together (and the groceries). It also avoids arguments over who's turn it is to reel a fish in. There's still a rod or two on board for jumpers and kelp paddies.

I have not acquired the handline taste and not sure I will. I do still run them on some days the box is filling up slowly. It saved the trip a few times last year, but still try to avoid it if I can. On red hot days, they don't get pulled out.

I can definitely see how the jigging thing could get tiresome for an older crew. It's a workout!

I tend to lob flat falls quite a bit. I can do that all day. That said, I should probably invest in a decent sniper outfit before I get too soft.

Coltsnipers and flat falls are about the same amount of work. The flatsides/speed jigs are the real burners. But yeah I agree, a coltsniper type should be do-able by most people no problem.

Probably a discussion for the dirtbag forum, but since we're on the topic.

It's not ideal, but I can rip flat sides with my M/H Trevala/Torium outfit if needed - just not for hours on end. Open to suggestions on a mid-grade sniper outfit though.

Eh, no need to have two separate tuna discussions... but we can try.

Specify what you mean by "sniper outfit" if you don't mind.

A decent spin outfit to cast to jumper patches and rip surface iron.
Ah. Well, not even sure why I needed to specify as my anwer would be the same.

The answer is ALWAYS Trevala. Trevela M action with a Saragosa or Spheros and you're all set.

I've gravitated more towards my casting setup with the GoMexus jigging reel though. But the spinning outfits will be favored by most.

You guys need to quit speaking in tongues

Confirmed tuna dying at the 125 line out of Garibaldi. For those not super familiar with the longitude lines out there: I consider action at the 125 to be about the western-most distance I'll take my boat to for starting a day of trolling. I'll go way past that while on the troll, but as far as a commute to start, that's a good limit to set for a small sport boat.

My tuna gear is getting sorted this weekend.
