Thank you all for avoiding political/election debates here on PNWFF...

This is just a note from Billy, Evan, and I to say thank you to everyone for keeping political debates and election conversations off of PNWflyfishing.com.

Oh sure, politics will creep in from time to time. Fishing/hunting/outdoors and government cross paths with some regularity. But I'm really proud of us as a community that we have all bought into the idea that this is a place where we can stay out of the larger culture wars and instead connect over our shared love of fishing and the outdoors.

I know that we all have our own feelings about national elections and hot button issues. And this was a big election season for a lot of people emotionally regardless of which boxes you checked on your ballot. But there are a million other sites on the internet where folks can beat a dead horse and yell at those they don't agree with. Let's let PNWFF continue to be the place where we can exist outside of all of that crap. Regardless of who you vote for, what church you attend (or not), your race, your background, your gender, or however else you define yourself, if you are here because you enjoy fishing and can be a decent soul to the rest of us, you will be welcome here.

Thank you to PNWFF leadership for creating a space where we don't have to wade through those currents in order to get to the holding water we're looking for (to couch it all in fishing terms). Seriously, you guys are doing a great job.

To be perfectly honest, we're not doing much in this regard. Our community is great at keeping the vibe going on their own.

Contrast to when we fired up our "sister" forum aimed at all gear fishing in the PNW. That lasted all of a few months because we couldn't keep policing it day in and day out. So we very much appreciate this community and its ability to keep this what it is.

I stumbled onto this forum a few months ago after recently renewing my long dormant interest in fly fishing and you guys and gals may not know how good you have it with this cool forum.

Maybe it's a function of the older age skew of fly fishers, and people being more wise and civil and not addicted to social media, but this site has a good thing going in several respects.

I don't think it's so much that we wouldn't have political threads here, but you have made clear since the outset that this ain't the place for them. And when threads that began with another topic have drifted toward the political, you shut it down, period, no exceptions. And we PNWFF members, being of above average intelligence, get the message. Yeah, I know, it's hard to believe that people have to actually be smart to get a simple message. It is our good fortune, that this membership of the intellectual elite, we are completely capable of civil discussions on even the most controversial of topics, like dirty azz nymphing. For instance.

... Or fly fishing with a bobber ...;)

To add to this, we've always tried to be clear that it's mostly the non-fishing "culture war" political threads that are the problem (and the associated trolling/insults/etc).

Fishing/hunting/public-lands/government topics can absolutely be worth discussing, if folks can be civil about it, and do pop up around here from time to time. WDFW/ODFW/NOF/NMFS and others are all governmental groups. It would be a weird fishing forum if we didn't discuss them and their actions when necessary.

San Juans are old news. It's all about Squirmy Worms now.
I prefer to call them San Juan’s because worms may be offended…. Kudos to the group for it not turning to a mud-slinging-popcorn-munching war-drama.

I guess I should have added that dirty azz nymphing by definitiion employs a bobber (or indicator) and often a plastic bead as the "nymph." Horrors! No wonder it's so controversial!
Or a Tenkara rod

I've found over the years that light rain shells and Sealskinz socks can be rather polarizing FF forum topics. Even more so than wolf or otter threads.

There was this period (decades ago, when Soap Lake was still young) that we'd found three flies that were pretty consistent producers at Rocky Ford. Sometimes a visiting angler to our HOME WATERS would ask "what are you using" so we'd reply SWW (yeah, I do know how to spell, sometimes).

This forum is the only social media I can login to at the moment without immediately getting drained or exhausted by nonstop culture war, definitely appreciate having this around
and that's exactly why we like it this way. I personally have removed myself from all other social media as of a few years ago. Currently, I'm also taking a break from consuming any news. My mental health does so much better when I spend more time doing more productive things.
