My last trip the bass were acting like musky. Following the fly until turning away and disappearing into the depths. Wish I had some foam damsel patterns as I saw a couple pop out of the weeds to eat on the surface.
Well done on the bass! I wish the wind and smoke hadn't been an issue and - those darn caprs - would have presented themselves. Always a next time.
I spotted a bunch further uplake that next day, but they didn't seem to be feeding, and showed no interest in a fly dropped near them. Water was still very murky in the shallows there.
I appreciated all the tips, tho, and had fun walking those flats with you!

I know this is a fly fishing forum.... but imitating a frog on the surface to get a Bass to explode is, IMHO, a worthy endeavor. The modern weedless frogs fished with gear can be very fun. Of course fly fisherman using poppers can (kinda of) get into this action, but a plastic frog on a lily pad getting smashed.....Is (IMHO) worthy of consideration.

These frog "lures" are essentially "weedless". You can cast them into the thickest part of a "weed bed". The thicker the better. Let them sit on a Lilly bad for a few minutes, twitch them off the pad wait for it... wait for it...and BOOM!!!!

My thoughts are to the "weedless" aspect of imitating a frog on a lily pad. The modern lures can literally smash thought the heaviest of "lettuce" without getting "snagged". I know that you can mitigate this with various fly tying methods....... but I wonder if any one has put forth the effort to "create/tie" a truly "weedless" imitation of a frog.
A small "frog" created to keep the hook embedded into soft plastic so that it can be truly weedless........Throw that baby out into the lily pads......

I've used variations on this with some success. A stealth bomber tied inverted with the bubbler loop expanded to encase the hook point. You can throw it up into the pads and drag or tumble it over them until it settles into a water pocket
Oddly, I haven't been finding many bass up in the pads at all this whole year, so ??? A green version was getting hit pretty often, but I lost it to a northern in MN.

Did a float trip in Northern MN a couple of days ago with a good pal. We both used 8 weights.
Had a 40+ fish day, all Small Mouths, 1 pike, all on top waters. Several fish 19". Doubled up 3 different times. Wonderful day.
