Puget Sound

A belated sound report from a couple days ago. Put in about 4-5 hours over a a half dozen beaches or so. It’s been pretty spotty the last few trips out. That can happen this time of year. Still nice to be out on the water fishing uncrowded conditions, launching from empty boat ramps….

Comparing pics, I think I caught this fish the last time I fished the beach it was caught off of. Just based on the location of the parasites near the tail.

Ran into @Kfish and @jasmillo while on a getaway with my gf. Coincidentally at the same time I was ready to throw a line. They didn’t have luck with any cuttys and neither did I, but I did surprise myself with a nice sized starry flounder. I learned that my one hand netting needs a lot of work.
99% sure I recognize that spot and exactly where the boat is on a drop tide there occasional SRC come in right there and hang for a few, though they spook easy as much of that bay is flat, seals patrol the exits and perhaps more attractive to flounder than SRC.

There were in fact patrolling seals!

I once stopped there with the fam. Found a fly box by the road. Walked out and there was a guy fishing. Flagged him over and asked if he was missing a fly box. Turned out he was. They were some nice home ties of neat little baitfish patterns. He was of course grateful to get them back.

We did see a single jumper in there. No luck enticing anything from that spot though. Never fished it before that day but it looked like it was worth a stop based on a Google map search of SRC spots near where we were squidding earlier.

Also a belated report, although not Puget Sound. We did a road trip down to California and I got a chance to fish for surf perch a bit south of Santa Cruz.

From the top of the hill I was able to spot the hole/trench in front the breaker waves and found the honey hole. 5/6 perch in a little over an hour of morning fishing.

wow i bet they put up a good fight, kind of like the bluegill i catch in summer on freshwater lakes?
But with extra power and tenacity that comes with a forked tail and having to occasionally face the prospect of shark attack.

Went squidding this morning for a couple of hours to try out my new install of the Autoboat smart head, it gives normal trolling motor spot lock ability and more. I used a 36lb trolling motor with it, max speed was 4.2kts on calm water.
Works great, spot lock definitely a must for squidding.

Ooh that’s an interesting upgrade that I hadn’t heard of! Looks like it is compatible with my MK Endura Max 55, too.

So, amortized, are these squid over or under a hundo each now?

J-shaped investment curve due to squid tariffs means K-Fish is positioned very well to win 2026' Squid Game. Indifference curves are moderating, humped yield curves have declined since concrete Pink rallies of August-September 2025, and the much-vaulted and/or much-vaunted inverted yield curve appears to be tracking closely with success of Rams and/or Seahawks football team and, obviously, inversely correlated with PNW snowpack.

I'm usually more of a lake guy, but I had a few hours and fished a nearby beach yesterday. Caught one 15" SRC and 6 juvenile coho in the rain. A few questions for those of you that spend a lot of time on the beach than I do:

1. What is your go to leader set up? I see a lot of recommendations for 6-8lb flouro...can you afford to go heavier knowing the extra wear and tear that you encounter on the beach?

2. Does fly selection vary between sunny days and dark days this time of year? I did well with orange/peach yesterday and white flies didn't seem to do much.

Personally, I like 12 lb flouro for src fishing. It’s way overkill, but the fish don’t care. There are a few reasons I like it.
1. It turns over better than 6 or 8.
2. In the fall, coho are still around and it serves well when you hook them while fishing for cutts.
3. I’m not a big fly changer. I’ve had the non slip loop wear through after multiple trips using the same fly without re-tying. It can happen over time even with 12, but it takes longer.
For subsurface, I like to put a two foot or section on 30 lb flouro with a perception loop on each end. That stops the lighter flouro from eating into your fly line loop. I then go 6’ of straight 12 with a perfection loop on one end and a non slip loop on the other. I know perfection loops are highly controversial…..😂😂😂

As far as flies go, I try and match with whatever I think best matches what they are eating. Cutts will eat a lot of patterns though that don’t match anything.
You’ll get a lot of different responses about leaders and flies which is great, because there is really no right or wrong and it’s good to have options.
Hope this helps.

If you did that well….stick with what works! I’m a 95% lake guy too, but a quick SRC/rezzie fix gets me outta the house on short days.
