Pink Year

Maybe that's what they are. Their fast like to zip along the boat and they be fast. Ya Snohomish opens Friday with a 4 fish limit. It's filling up. -2 tide for the opening

There is a significant difference in size between harbor porpoises (6 feet or less) and pilot whales; 2 to 3 times larger than harbor porpoises.

Interestly, harbor porpoises largely disappeared from Puget Sound in the late 1950s only to reappear after 2000 and now can be quite common though fall to predation from the Biggs (transient) orcas.

It's the most convenient river for me to hit before work, unfortunately my favorite section is closed till the Pinks are super dark but I'll be checking out some spots opening day scouting for stretches with reasonable sized crowds.

Fun fact: Southern Resident Killer Whales will kill Harbor Porpoises for play, but then they won't eat the carcasses. On the other hand, the Transients have been observed killing salmon for fun, but never eating them.

I am fascinated by Killer Whales. I use them as an example anytime someone tries to tell me "humans are the most evil animal". If a Southern Resident Killer Whale had the ability to conduct mass deforestation, wage global conflict leading to the deaths of millions, and bring other species to extinction, they would.

What I find fascinating is the relative lack of human mortality from wild orcas. The recent boat tippers aside, orcas have tons of opportunity to kill and eat humans and simply don't. Orcas eat piles of seals but dont fuck with surfers like sharks do at times.

Sometimes, in my more fanciful thinking phases, I believe it to be because they are smart enough to know better than to make enemies of people.

Who would want to eat a human that’s full of gas station nachos and takis?

Looking forward to some 2h practice. Winter is coming.

Seeing a lot more upriver reports with lots of humpies being slayed. The rain really seemed to move a lot upriver.
As you mentioned, good swinging practice for this coming winter. More rain possible expected for Sunday and Monday.

Yesterday, @Squatchin and I put a Miyawaki popper and a pink gurgler over approximately 105,274 fish. Nary a sniff. Back to a weighted fly and a fish a cast. We tried! Maybe it’ll work in the river closer to the spawn?
Back in the 90s I visited my buddy in AK a few times. Unfortunately, the silvers weren't quite in yet, but the pinks were thick.

I forget which Susitna trib this was, but I got this one to hit a fly just a touch below the surface. Of course, the water was only about 2' deep, but they were almost playful. I tried for 30 minutes to get one to actually hit on top and they just wouldn't do it.
We settled in right above the snaggers (legal in AK then, probably still) and proceeded to catch a bunch of decent pinks on dry lines and flies that were only a few inches under the surface. Pretty fun seeing the hump out of the water on the chase and grab even if they were river humpies.

The natural beauty just isn't quite the same as the Duwamish, but it'll do. 😏

How many cement plants do they have there, hmmm? Everybody needs cement.
The gurgler I threw has teeth marks on it from AK coho.

Which reminds me, it’s still August therefore still summer in the PNW and I have not, ‘til now, listened to one of my favorite summer jams: Hot Cheetos and Takis

Record pink run in my home river this year. Where 400,000 is average, 1.5 mil in river right now...with many more stacked near the mouth. Still lots of bright fish, but I've hung up the rods waiting for coho now.

If you play this video then scroll back up to the Dahmer meme you get the best bang for your buck.

Fluger reel ?
Yeah it’s a Pfleuger that has the Airflo Bass line on it, strung on a 9’ 8 wt TFO. That setup just seems to work the best. I have a 9 wt Air Cel line on a modern reel that I was using a 10’ 8 wt Loomis IMX to toss and it works, too, but the balance of the other (inexpensive) setup is just better.
