SFR Confessional: I kinda hate November

Sorta fishing-related

I've grown to realize that I don't like November much at all.

Weather has turned to garbage.
Days are short and dark
Daylight savings sucks for daylight
Bass fishing is done
Creek fishing is done
Rivers CAN have fish, but are often blown out
Flooding
Trails turn to mudbogs
Rodents looking for winter homes
Too warm for the bad weather to mean snow in the mountains
We get hammered with pineapple express windstorms that stress me out (I acknowledge that the specific location of my house makes this worse)
Too many sports happening on Sunday for me to watch them all without being a zombie
I never get to do what I want to do for Thanksgiving

Okay, those last two are just a "me" thing. But the rest?

I don't remember feeling this way when I was a young, so perhaps it's just the crabbiness and responsibility of adult life (I loved windstorms when I was a kid, but I wasn't the one responsible for replacing shingles). But man.... it kinda sucks.

It's the start of the long dark...
Power is out currently
The first winter steelhead used to show up any day now, that was always a big deal.
Now it's hard to find early winter steelhead.
It's a blowin' out here this morning...
Watch for down trees, there's plenty
:)

My birthday month. Weather is almost always bad, and my birthday is usually very close to the darkest day of the year.

That said, I do like Thanksgiving. I think it's my favorite holiday.

When I was a kid November was awesome, fish if the river was low or shoot ducks if the ditches were flooding, always seemed to be one or the other. I dont shiot ducks anymore though and I'll confess that needing the river to be in shape in November is proving to be a losing proposition. The nook is never coming back to fishable levels I'm pretty sure

Ya all want some cheese and crackers with yer whine.
But, I'm with ya on the fishing sucks in November,
My river is brown and the creeks are all closed, the warm water fish are hiding out.
At least the dust is settled on my road

I always hated November growing up in Montreal, a waste of a month. Cold and dark, brown (all the colors of October gone). Too cold for sailing, fishing very slow, skiing hasn't started - did I mention it is a wasted month?

Come to think of it, still don't like November much.

Cheers come December

These months are why I enjoy videogames. Gives me an escape. I ramp up my time in the gym and add some extra miles to my daily runs to make up for the lack of other outdoor activities... But I kinda enjoy having less on the agenda for a while. I start to hit burnout in October.

Let's get to the bottom of this...

You wake up and get to do exactly what you want for a perfect Josh Thanksgiving....what's that look like? MV5BYjQ1NmFjMTMtZWViOC00ZDlhLWI0YTYtY2MwZGVlMDQwMTQ3XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNzU1NzE3NTg@._V1_QL75_UX50...jpg
😁😁😁

Maybe it is just me or as they say, time seems to go by faster as you age, but November will be over before you know it.
The big dark will begin to recede in about a month and a half and our first tastes of false spring will be upon us in February.
I’m a fan of Team November since it is my favorite month to fish for searun cutts by a wide margin.

Novembers and really November thru February were what made me decide to move from Ocean Shores back home to a bit south of Seattle. You likely don't know rain like I know rain. Edit to add wind. So much wind.

I hear ya Josh, but I am stoked for Thanksgiving this year. My brother, who hasn’t visited us here in 17 years, is bringing my niece and nephew, who’ve never been. We’ve got the week off work and I’m looking forward to showing them around. I told them to pack layers including full rainproof outer wear. The weather is what it is but it’s not like there’s nothing to do, and like Stoney points out, there’s always searuns…Sometimes in a gale, but if ya just gotta fish, they’re there, it’s open and you’ve got a chance.

As much as I like the idea of Thanksgiving, Winter Solstice is the day I find myself most thankful.
I'm escaping to Mexico for Thanksgiving this year. Managed to sneak up to Canada two years ago. Couldn't escape family obligations last year, but not for lack of trying.

Except for the winter holiday bullshit of xmas and Thanksgiving (channeling OMJ) I find that every month offers a veritable cornucopia of recreational options best suited to whatever weather conditions occur....and being retired I'm not restricted to hoping that the weekends coincide with decent weather.

And I've found that few women share the male idea of what constitutes a 'perfect thanksgiving'...which generally consists of men sitting on their fat asses watching football swilling beer while the ladies prepare the feast and clean up the post meal wreckage.

Perhaps I've survived 55 years of marriage because I'd much rather help cook and do dishes than sit in front of the tube and listen to game commentary from the pseudo-sports 'experts'.

November is dreary. My birthday is in November. I didn't used to mind standing in a river in the rain and casting, but with maturity I think I've become less fond of that. My birthday is this Friday, so that is even more dreary as it reminds me that I'm on the precipice of old age. Shudder! What the hell?!! I'd think about going fishing, but one of the boats has "trailer light issues." I fvcking hate trailer light issues. Drives me nuts, kinda' like the weather outside. Just heard a good sized tree crack a few minutes ago. I'll go survey the east 40 in a day or two after this wind stops to see what broke and fell.

It's the ground wire. It's always the ground wire.
