Community sharing and two requests

I wanted to THANK all of you for the kind words of support and the PM's, it means a lot!

Things are going well, and the stress and fears are settling down, and as @FishyJere had stated the tears. I am not ashamed to admit the tears, at times for no apparent reason.

I have learned some things and feel important to share. I didn't know that there is a possibility of a "hereditary" colon cancer. I will be seeing a geneticist, so I can help my kids and brother (and kids) understand if they are at a greater risk. I am being tested and looked at for "Lynch Syndrome".

Things with my cancer, at this point seem contained, which mean possibly just surgery to remove that section of colon and lymph nodes (for more testing).

This is as I knew an AWESOME Community!

Thank you again... Tight lines and GO RIP LIPS!!

I have a family history for colon cancer. My mom had three separate types of cancer, one being colon. One of her cancer doctors suggested that my sister and I get the genetic test for Lynch Syndrome, which, of course, we did. We both tested negative!

Thanks, for the update, Shawn. Fingers still crossed for you.

Hang in there, my friend.

Thanks for the update @Shawn Seeger . Keep fighting. Fuck cancer.

And yeah, probably time for me to get the ol' colon checked. Sigh.

Yeah I'm not far away from this myself.

Frankly such things scare the hell out of me. I've always been one who would rather stick my head in the sand. But this post is a great reminder of how important this stuff is and that I need to remember I have loved ones to consider as well.

Fuck cancer!

It is easy to do, the prep is not that bad.
If you've ever had a bad burrito from a mini mart, or Montezumas Revenge from a trip abroad, you will wonder what all the hype is about.
:)

Or sushi from the hitching post mini mart in soap lake.....
Exactly

You're asleep for the procedure, no pain involved.
The prep, done correctly so things come out cleanly, is just overblown...

Has anyone done whatever the test is with the talking/walking box? Cologuard I think? Where you collect some poop and send it in?

My mom died of ovarian cancer during the pandemic, probably exacerbated by a late diagnosis - terminal by the time it was found. As an only child, I moved to her place in California for 6mo to take care of her. Dying of cancer is horrible and not the way I want to go.

Since I also had a first cousin on her side die of breast cancer at an early age, and I have an adult daughter, I had genetic screening done. Turns out I have not one but TWO bad variants linked to breast/ovarian/uterine cancers that also show some connection to colon and prostate cancers. My daughter ended inheriting one of them and is now on a more aggressive monitoring/imaging program that might save her life.

Well, shitfire as my PawPaw used to say...

So despite my "clean as a whistle, come back in 10 years" result in my first colonoscopy before the genetic screening a couple years ago, I'm on the frequent flyer program for those things now. I advise all my friends who have cancer in their family history to get screened.

Fight the good fight Shawn.

Fuck cancer indeed!

Sorry to hear Shawn, wishing you all the best!
Thank you for the reminder too, I am due for it.

Guy that works for me has done this. I did a poop on a stick thing a few years back and sent it in. Not really certain what that was. I've had 2 colonoscopies since I turned 50.

Folks should also ensure they have a yearly physical and get their PSA checked.

As I have said before, this website/forum is a great community, even if it is mostly virtual. I have come to know some, met some, and fish with some (hopefully more in the future).

Now the status update, I had my colon surgery to remove the cancer. During the surgery, they found a second cancer in my appendix, so it was removed. Then, the (long) wait for biopsy results. Now, Tuesday was a GREAT and BLESSED day in my life. Met with my oncologist, and I was told I am CANCER FREE!!! I will be on surveillance schedule with CT scans and very specific blood/enzyme tests every 6 month and frequent flyer colonoscopy schedule for the next 3 years.

So, THANK YOU for all of you for positive thoughts and prayers! I also want to say THANK YOU to those that DM'ed me with their stories and the journeys they are on, and encouraging words. They really helped me in those "hard" days!

Lastly and again, I asked, PLEASE schedule a colonoscopy! It can save your life!! It is far easier than the words cancer and the surgery and treatments that could follow.

I will lift up, in prayers and thoughts, those that are still on the journey!

Fish as many days as you can!
Shawn

Man that's great news Shawn! Colon CA has been punching above its weight in the last five years, increased incidence at younger ages (<50) of onset than in years past.

And like Tom Mitchell said above, sometimes genetic risks run right down family lines, maybe Ovarian and/or breast cancer tips you off to the presence of a BRCA1,2 mutation. For a man, that gene can mean risk of breast and prostate cancer and for your kids, cousins and sibs, more attentive screening becomes really important for those same tumor types.

That’s great to hear!
My coworker recently passed because of colon cancer, she was diagnosed with stage 4 2yrs ago at the age of 38. Left behind two young boys.
At 47 I recently passed the Cologuard screening. Now urging my wife to do the same.
