Coffee talk

I get anxiety just think about dealing with so many small bags. I quite like chipping away at bulk orders.
I order 5# bags (morecoffee.om), usually two at a time. They last me a couple months. I was very curious (and interested) in your order but the thought of me wrestling a 50# bag of coffee beans says "chiropractor". ;-)

I quite like Morecoffee, and know the founder/owner quite well. He's actually a fly fisherman. I haven't talked to him in too long, though. I should check in with him to see if maybe I can get samples for everyone ;)

I recently placed my largest ever coffee order. 23 pounds of green beans are on their way here, presumably somewhere between California and Washington (SM's only charges a flat rate UPS $10-$15 for shipping depending on how much you're buying). I don't remember the total but it was between $150 and $200. I got more than ever because of somebody here writing that prices might be expected to go up, and because with my new espresso machine I am using more coffee than I was before. Coffee is just something I don't feel the need to whittle down to as inexpensive as I can get it. Anyway, I've mentioned how I can't settle on one grower or origin or style of prep. I love the variety and some experimentation. I've been in coffee hog heaven with my roaster and brewing methods and have been dialing in some bangin' shots most recently with some Kenya Kirinyaga coffee

How do you store all those bags?

Give this about two months and I should have something worked out. He said they're making some changes so once things are settled then we can get some samples underway.

If you don't hear from me on this in like two months, be sure to remind me.

I used to keep a diary of what I bought, how long it took to get to whatever roast I took it to. There were a few beans I didn't like when I took them into that BLACK roast (isn't black the samething as burned?). I've been very happy with Morecoffee.

Friends don't let friends do dark roast

I just got a 25# bag of the Columbia you got from Copan @Evan B. Great prices, free shipping, plus comes in a burlap sack so I feel more legit now. Haven't cracked into it yet but looking forward to it in the new year.

I usually order around 20# at a time with everything from 1# to 10# bags of different coffees (usually four 5# bags). I have a sealed storage bin that I think is sold for storing dog food. It's on wheels and I keep all my greens in there. Seems to work well.

It turns out that I can’t consistently pull a nice espresso shot before say 6am or so. 6:30 might even be pushing it. There’s too many steps and too much technique. This morning’s 5:30 am fiasco resulted in a fine spray of (subpar) espresso all over as I hit the steam button for the wand instead of the water button to add to my product. <head slap> it’s kind of a catch-22. Back to the good ol’ Aeropress for the first cup.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit Hawaii several times beginning in 2019. Hawaiian coffee is some of my favorite so I poke around; local shops, farm tours, and Costco. On my first trip I could buy 100% Kona medium roast for $30lb and Kauai medium roast for $20/1.5lbs. I brought a bunch home for gifts. The last year I saw Kona coffee at Costco was 2022 and it was $45/lb. This year Kauai med roast is $38/1.5 pounds. Still worth it for me to enjoy at the condo as that 1.5 pounds is enough for my 2.5 week visit. But I won’t be buying extra to bring home.

I do like Kona coffee, but never found it worth the price of admission. I especially wish it were easier, or even possible, to find in green beans in the quantities I can make use of.

As far as flavor profiles, I found a few from Laos a few years ago that seemed almost identical. An old high school friend was working as an importer for a while and was getting me some exotic stuff. The stuff from Laos really surprised me.

It's always unfortunate when we just happen to have a real taste for the most outrageously expensive stuff, whether it's coffee, fly reels, boots, whatever.

@Evan B I had some coffee in Thailand, near Laos, many years ago that I still recall as remarkable. And especially welcome because most of the coffee available at the time was instant Nescafé. It was being served by a street vendor who was brewing with a Moka pot. Not Laos-origin for sure, but coulda been.

For the most part coffee is coffee to me. Beers and wines all tasted the same to me too. Guess I don't have a discerning pallett. I'm happy with Folgers on sale at the Safeway. Don't get me wrong, I love coffee and drink it all day, just don't care too much what it is. As long as it's not instant, yuck!
I like a heaping scoop to a full maker cup, Lotta steamed milk and sugar.
Mom gave me the coffee scoop years ago, but I never could find it after Christmas morning. Guess what showed up in an old ornament box?

I’d drink your Folger’s with you, Tom. Nice scoop too.
Most of the big commercial coffee brands do taste about the same because they burn the crap out of the beans to help achieve a consistent flavor profile—burnt aka very dark roast. The stuff that needs a lotta milk and sugar to taste good. It’s possible you have not had a chance to try really good, fresh roasted coffee to taste the difference. It’s also possible you just prefer the Folgers which is fine, too. Cheers

I buy the ground dark roast from the Chef Store. If it is good enough for a restaurant, it is good enough for morning coffee with a dollop of half and half with another dollop of sugar free Torini liquid coffee syrup.

I just really don't understand the appeal of dark roast. Only person I've ever really asked is my mom who conceded she'd never tried a medium or lighter roast. I guess if you're loading it with cream and sugar, it may have more flavor... But the only flavor going from medium to dark adds is ash.

This is meant less as a talking down on someone's taste and more of a "am I missing something?" kind of thing.
