I've said it before when he came up in conversation, Pete Rose was an amazing baseball player, there's no doubt about that. By dozens of the sport's metrics, he should have been in the hall of fame as soon as he was eligible. I don't fault people who make a case for his being allowed to be inducted. He holds MLB records that will never be broken. But the guy was also apparently a world-class s--tbag of a human by virtually every measure, as well.
We all know he broke the number one rule of baseball, don't bet on the games. But he's also a federally convicted tax cheat who went to prison for it, someone who was deeply addicted to gambling and lied about it for decades, allegedly ended up in hock multiple times to the mob due to his massive losses, refused to acknowledge the daughter he fathered with one of his mistresses for 20 years, charged $100 for autographs (even for kids) as his main source of income after his career (while sitting in a casino), has a million stories out there about what a jerk he was to many who met him, and don't forget the time he cussed up a storm and talked about seeing Joe DiMaggio in the shower when speaking to a US Army kids baseball camp:
And worst of all, he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14 year old girl, admitted it was true, and his excuse was "I thought she was 16" (the age of consent in Ohio). He was a 34 year old married father of two at the time it happened.
To be honest, I could get over most of the other stuff. He's a baseball player, not my accountant. But not that last item. Disgusting.
Per the article link above:
"Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game," Manfred wrote in a letter to attorney……..”
He sure as shit was a threat to the game while playing, also while still alive and not playing. One gets elected to the Hall of Fame, Baseball, Football, Tiddlywinks, whatever, for what you were, not just what you accomplished statistically during your career while associated with your respective sport or occupation.
Rule#5 for Election:
5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.
I’m with @Josh here. He was a repulsive human being on and off the field. Let sleeping dogs lie, and that’s not fair to all of man’s best friend out there.
One word, Ty Cobb - The HoF is full of reprobates, drunks, gamblers, womanizers, abusers, etc - either kick them out or let Rose in, don't care which, I do care about hypocrisy.
