2022 Garden Thread

Got my first plantings of the new season sowed today. Put in Cortland storage onions from seed, under a temp. hoop cloche. Also added some Mustard Greens side by side with some Radish. These are under some row cover cloth. My Walla Walla onions I planted last Aug. are waken up and going. I'm still eating carrots and Kale I planted in July. Amazing how well they Winter in the ground. Loving to be in the garden on a sunny day...

Nice lights
Were they pricey?

So I'm using generic shop LED lights as grow lights in my basement as seed starters. Since I'm just then moving them outside to grow (rather than growing fully indoors), I don't need fancy grow lights. I think they were basically $25 a piece for 4' lights off Amazon.

Been doing this 40 years and just upgraded there is a noticeable difference but i built 3 greenhouses in that time and relied on sunlight and a heater. This is way better.

Been hitting it hard in March. We kinda let our garden go the last two years. Why? Maybe covid but that’s an excuse. Not sure, older parents to deal with, kids , newer dog that digs. Just got lazy is the truth. Not this year. Homemade spaghetti sauce, more salads, beet juice - yeah that will really motivate you huh? 😱

So this is nothing more than an outlay, playing around and measuring a bit before a more permanent placement. We have to fence it because of our lovely golden retriever 🐕 , which adds an extra dilemma in organizing it.

I did build the zucchini box out of repurposed wood from an old pergola and some left over fencing boards.

We have a troph to add, plus I will be building two more 4x4’ lower profile raised beds. From repurposed wood again and only costing me about $35 in screws. Dang screws have really gone up in $$. Most is cedar but there is some fir so shelf life will be short.

The bay leaf trees are way to big, and we might only use a dozen leafs per year. If that. The plum tree is variety tree and kicks out some good ones.

Carrots, potatoes, zucchini ( love grilling it with garlic salt) - tomatoes, green onion, chives and other herbs, potatoes and beets, going to rotate lettuce this year because in past we get overwhelmed and so much goes to waste. Arugula, butter leaf, red leaf and a couple others,

Will post pic at end of April or early May. Should be set for most part. 😬 I hope.

Been helping a local kitchen that serves disadvantaged folks in the county. It’s named “Gracie’s Kitchen after the founder who passed away a few months ago. My fellow Mater Gardener Volunteers and some folks from the area built the beds, filled with soil and now building a micro misting system. It’s been a steep learning curve but progress is happening. The beds were built tall so the volunteers cooking at Gracie’s (all older folks) didn’t have far to bend to garden. Been a fun project!

Speaking of. What do you think of my girls horticultural expression of Xmas 21’ ?
I’ve got to rid it soon but I thought it had a unique con cough element.

Berry Hill is starting to perk up! Strawberries were growing here wild, so I added Pineberries, Rainier, Puget Crimson, and Albion. The Pineberries(white Hula Berries) are the bullies on the block. I need to thin them every year.

The blueberries are in full bud now with the leaves just starting to grow. Varieties are Pink Lemonade, Blue Jay, Pink Icing, and Jelly Bean.

Fun fact: Ripe white strawberries and ripe pink blueberries are not as appealing to squirrels and birds!20220406_140524.jpg

Found a few of these next to my beds while weed whacking last week. Unfortunately most fell victim to the string before I saw what was going on. I’m a pretty big mushroom nerd and this is only my second time finding landscape morels but I’m not really looking that hard for them in the city. To see them in my garden was pretty cool. Growing on the edge of cardboard mulch in heavily disturbed ground. My cardboard mulch had orange cup fungus growing on it since late fall last year. If you hunt morels then you know what I’m talking about 😎

Filled up my new raised bed last weekend. The peas are up. Still eating kale, broccoli, lettuce, and collards planted last year. Have tomatoes growing in the house. I hauled in and wheelbarrowed 8 yards of topsoil, mulch, and bark into my backyard last weekend. I felt kind of wiped out on Monday.
