2022 Garden Thread

We get mushroom logs as a present sometimes.
One year we forgot about them, as we stacked them in the garage and were going to get back to them once the holidays were over.
By March we had mushrooms growing out all over...so they were easy.
We did literally nothing at all to them, didn't even take them out of the box.

For cry'n out loud. First the squirrels (that we used to feed before they stabbed us in the back) decided to start digging up vegies in Virginia's raised beds in the back and yesterday she notice a rabbit munching on our lawn.... it's only a matter of time before the rabbit figures out there are vegetables nearby.

Virginia has wire screen over most of her plants but I don't know if it will keep out both the squirrels and a rabbit !

She can't grow vegetables in the front yard due to the urban deer that live in our neighborhood. Danged critters !

When I lived in Silver Star We always had deer in our yard. There was two apple trees where we were. After they bloomed and had apples on the trees we had deer there every night. Bucks and does.

Anyone grow mushroom's ?
I had a failed attempt some years back. I bought some mycelia plugs from Fungi Imperfecti and planted them in maple logs, soaked them in water, and half buried them in hardwood sawdust as instructed. Nothing happened. I grew a bagged kit shortly after that which worked great.

Have used https://www.mycolabs.com/gourmet-grow-kits many times, excellent company, ship fast, best prices, top shelf as my Canadian friend’s would say, and I speak strictly as a satisfied comstomer.

I moved to Hood River late last summer and my new house has a bunch of raised beds with a handful of hold-overs from last season. Some I recognize (onions) and some I don't. It will be really interesting to see what might have wintered over.

I plan to plant my very first veggie garden this year. I'm told that April 1 is the general rule of thumb for planting, so I have a bit more time to think about what I'd like to grow.

Those onions are biannual, being second year are going to go to seed, so let them flower and save the seed, they will cross with other onions and chives if they are in the area but if its only those isolated onion sprouts in 1 raised bed then its a pretty safe bet you will have some pure seed.

So much to learn, so few supple brain cells...
Thanks for the info!
