In a variety of fisheries I have experimented a lot with different hook style and it is obvious that not all hooks are created equal. It was is clear that the effectiveness of a given can depend on the situation in which it is used.
The hook bend in the picture on post #9 for the two flies. The one on the left the hook point is pointing towards the eye of the hook while the one on the pointed is pointed above the eye of the hook. In most cases it has been my experience for some applications hook pointing more directly towards the hook eye perform better at converting hook ups to landed fish. Such hook also may have a lower hook-up to strike ratios so there can be a bit of balancing between choosing the best style of hook chosen for a given application.
