PNW Flood Watch - Dec 8-12, 2025

Sounds like a jolly good time to jump on a jet to some warm & dry

Or the 2006, both 100yr events.

So far, this one is a bit of a dud here in Gold Bar.
2006 was brutal. The Snohomish punched through the French Slough levee and then flooded back UP the OLD Skykomish valley right to the edge of our Fryelands neighborhood in Monroe. Luckily, they built the whole neighborhood about 2' above the regular elevation.

My neighbor & I decided to duck hunt the flooded field to the west. We literally WALKED out from our houses. This is before the elementary school was there.
We both had a dozen decoys and our shotguns. I didn't bring the mutt since we knew he would have to float the whole time. I'm sure our other neighbors were not amused. 😁

There were mice and spiders anywhere it was dry, which was pretty much just tall grass and fence posts. It was creepy. I don't remember shooting so no ducks for us.

Snohomish was a mess. Hopefully the levees and dikes hold this time!

Looks like the gauge at concrete on the skagit already peaked for today. 'only' 28 feet so not as bad as the first predections. That 40.65 on Thursday morning is looking bad still though.

Looks like it's running out of oomph right around Eugene. I see some stations on the Willamette taking a pretty good bump this week but the North Umpqua is pretty much flat lining. We haven't had a good push of water yet this fall.
Kinda sad actually....
I was hopin' to take a road trip for a look at a risen NU and EU this weekend.

As an indication of what can happen when it's "bad", read up on 1862 for the US West Coast. 43 days of atmospheric river dropping 10' of rain, ending with warm rain on snow. An "inland sea" appeared in the CA Central Valley where land was not visible to the eye, and steamships were able to safely transit Willamette Falls.

Think about what something close to that would look like today. Crazy.

Washington was freezing at that time. Columbia River frozen, feet of snow in Seattle.

Bad winter

Just went for a wet 5mi run along Johnson Creek near me. In my 8yrs in this house, I don't think I've ever seen it up this high.

Looks like the Express of rain is moving North. I have 1.94 inches of rain here, just today.

This will be bad for the 2027 humpy run I'm afraid...and the chances of getting a
the new PNWFF Humpy shirt.

Not sure which is more troubling...but both are concerning.

Don't worry, they've spawned heavily in the quiet side channels that get less scouring at flood levels.

As fun as they are, the coho and kings and steelhead might appreciate a few less 2027 humpies eating their food.

I just want the shirt...
😁
