PNW Flood Watch - Dec 8-12, 2025

It’s been pouring non-stop all day in Vancouver.

And this is only the first day of rain. Gonna be a long week...

It looks like at least in the Seattle area we’ll get a bit of a break tonight before the rain ramps back up in the late afternoon tomorrow.

Looks like it's running out of oomph right around Eugene. I see some stations on the Willamette taking a pretty good bump this week but the North Umpqua is pretty much flat lining. We haven't had a good push of water yet this fall.

This is a pretty cool site that does some script work to put a lot of info in one place.

I read somewhere that this Atmospheric River is 3 times longer than the average one...

We got a little more than half the forecasted rain here in Hood River but the local rivers are already above what they were supposed to top out at. With another 1-2" on tap for the next 24 hours it should get interesting. Good news is not a lot of flat ground around here...

7,000 miles. From the Philippines to the PNW.

These weather events are fun to talk about. Unfortunately they happen every year or two. If one lives on one of the 'S' rivers it is a risk/reward decision to live there. The risk comes to fruition all too many times. But we live in the Pacific NW. It is only several inches of rain and lasts a few days.

Now let's talk about real events. Around the turn of this century, maybe sooner, anyone remember almost 40 inches in a little more in a month? Lake Sammamish came up about 8 feet above winter levels and flooded a number of apartments and condos in the north end. Rivers were way up. The lake I live on came up 3 feet above winter levels and flooded a number of waterfront homes. The locks could not release water fast enough. Whodathunk..

Just like snow, we get alarmed with a foot of it. Look back in the history around when I was born Issaquah had 6 feet of snow. Now that is an event!
