Got any bird pics?

question vs pic - what kind of owl makes a crow like screech (not loud), and then normal woo hoo. was heard last night up in the doug fir behind house in vancouver. thx go

I'd be inclined to say Barred Owl.

"Ask a birdwatcher what a Barred Owl sounds like and they'll likely respond, “Who cooks for YOU? Who cooks for YOU all?” Sometimes when a pair begins to duet, though, this devolves into owl noises that Birds of the World calls “a raucous jumble of cackles, hoots, caws and gurgles.”

If you are interested, send me a pm with your cell number or email and I’ll send you a video of the barred owls in the park across from my house talking it up. You can see if their calls match what you heard.

Barred owls have their "normal calls" and then some crazy, crazy calls that can be chiilling, or almost like a hysterical human laugh, or then some are more brief..like short barks. Very wide range.
Locally, the calls of the other 4-5 owl species run generally consistent with their main calls with a pitch difference between the sexes of dueting pairs. The Barred are the real talkers of the owls I hear.

To agree and add to @Jim F. reference:

Try the fifth one down (CALLS- New York recording) for non-typical barred. I hear this added occasional here (western WA).

A male Great Horned Owl has taken up residence out in the back. No pics, he's elusive and I only hear him after dark. Males make a fairly low pitched Hoo Hoo Hoo call. Females make the same call but a higher pitch. Females will screech if there is an intruder near the nest.

With the snow on the ground our feeders have become quite popular. The little ones will stay when we go out, but the big ones flee. Like bugs, they pretty much all look the same to me. Gotta learn to observe more. So far they are small and brown. Some have black heads, some have yellow bellies and some have red tummies. There are some plump robins too.

My iBird Pro phone app has a nice library of calls for the GHO with explanations for the different calls and sex of the birds.
