U.S. drafts plan to bring grizzly bears back to Washington’s North Cascades (WAPO)

I don’t know much about bears but I like them and think it’s our responsibility to be safe when we are in the wilderness. Nothing makes me sadder than going looking for wilderness and finding that it’s been tamed for our use.

That said, putting big predators in a place with insufficient food near people is a recipe for disaster. However, I’ve been more convinced by the commenters on here arguing that there is in fact sufficient food for them. Yes, bears in other parts of the country rely on a higher portion of a meat based diet. I’m not a bear expert but I know across the animal kingdom, you will find two populations of the exact same species that eat completely different diets, largely dictated by where they live. It would not surprise me if introducing bears from an area where they primarily ate berries, into another area where they primarily eat berries, will lead to minimal human-bear interactions of the “being mauled” kind.

Unrelated, Wdfw should consider deploying electric fences and grizzly’s during spawning season along the north fork stilly. I bet poaching would be reduced to zero

Not griz related but a manzanita berry pile I came across last week while mushroom hunting.

Given the area I was in this is obviously from a black bear. It’s always cool to see what the locals are seasonally feeding on.
Pretty inefficient digestion. This is why mom told me to slow down and chew properly before swallowing.

DK and I were hiking into a run on the Thompson, going through some small alders when we came across some steaming (literally) bear scat - all grasses, leaves and some berries, no bells.

Very progressive for a state often derided as a bastion of hard right Christian rednecks hell bent on cousin marrying.

Kentucky is #2...
But with this here cocaine bear, it could become sort of a tourist mecca for cousin marrying and reclaim the #1 spot...
The Noah's Ark theme park might help draw cousins too, so Kentucky has a lot going for it, not to mention the chicken, which I like.
:)

Top 10 Most Inbred States Revealed

1.
West Virginia: Known for its mountainous terrain and historical isolation, West Virginia ranks high in inbreeding rates due to its geographical and cultural factors.

2.
Kentucky: With a strong equestrian culture and a history of close-knit communities, Kentucky shows elevated levels of inbreeding.

3.
Mississippi: This southern state has faced socioeconomic challenges, contributing to a higher likelihood of inbreeding within certain communities.

4.
Alabama: Cultural and historical factors, along with geographic isolation in rural areas, contribute to increased inbreeding rates in Alabama.

5.
Arkansas: Rural communities and historical factors contribute to the prevalence of inbreeding in Arkansas.

Competition is tough, as you can see.

I'll have to take your word for it.

PS nothing political just funny. Hopefully we haven't grown beyond some joking around.
