NFR World Cup

Non-fishing related
Two years ago, I would have been happy with the second half. This team has come a long way.
A ton of fans complained about Pochettino from day one. Then the complaints magnified clear through this March. Team's not progressing. Doesn't play well together. Haven't figured out an identity. Blah blah blah. From the day he was hired Poch made it clear that his objective was to try lots of different players and tactics. To figure out the best team and approach to field at the WC. Everything the team worked on over the last 2 years was for this tournament.

Fans will do well to remember this after Poch leaves and the next coach comes in. Now that doesn't mean we shouldn't care about the interim results and stuff we see. Of course we should. But keeping the big picture in mind.

For years we wished the day would come when we would have top flight players not even make the roster.
For years we wished the day would come when we would have a deep enough roster to be able to juggle players and tactics to fit the opponent on any given match.

That day is here my friends.

Messi is human!

After his missed PK, Austria is making it a game. That said it feels like it is just a matter to time before Argentina puts one in the net. And just like that Messi scores his record making goal!

Messi is not human, he is a dog!!!! A dog that plays futbol! Note that the below links to the epic video compilation with narration of the brilliant story by Hernan Casciari was published in 2012, way before he moved away from Barcelona or had won anything with the Argentina national team. Against Algeria, 20 years to the day he scored his first goal World Cup for Argentina, he scored his first tripple in a WC against a goalkeeper who is French former international Zinedine Zidane's son, so he is doing all this against players half his age, sons of players Messi had played against/with in his youth. Today, 2 days before his 39th birthday, he became the lone all time highest scorer in World Cup history, 18 goals in 28 games, 6 World Cups played. Even with all that, 5 minutes after regulation time, he follows through on multiple saves/rebounds till he buries his second goal today, hungry and commited like a youngster. Father time does not seem to have a hold on the GOAT! What a privilege to be alive and enjoying him play!

Messi is the Man...

And joining the Old Man Tour, Cristiano scores two goals today as Portugal steamrolls Uzbekistan and becomes the first player to score goals in 6 World Cups...

Nice to see little bro get a win !!!

All North America finals still out there.on the table !!

😆

Canada moves on!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO CANADA!!!!!!!
I was very fortunate when I booked my hotel room in Vancouver for last night…apparently the same room i stayed in was a couple grand more when people began booking rooms for the World Cup…FIFA booked most hotels in advance, but as the games got nearer many rooms were released for rebooking; i had no clue of this when I made my reservation…sometimes its better to be lucky than good…

Hope your not planning on crossing the border soon!!

Just came back over the border. The "little bro" is pissed. Still no US wines in their liquor stores. This is serious!!

They even took three very old men into the "little room" for further questioning. As the youngster in the group, I was asked why the other two were walking so slow. My answer was they are very old.

Lots of traffic on both sides of the border. Very little traffic crossing the border.

Even in the Stanley Cup they play until a team scores. None of this penalty shots on goal to determine the winner.

2- nil USA ahead...
Been a good game so far.
Officials sort of suck

Not a soccer aficionado by any stretch, but that red card seemed like a bit of a stretch, especially with a bunch of no-calls with the grabbing going on earlier. Obviously biased, but I don't totally understand how some of these calls work.

as an aside, I think LeBron should take notes on how to properly flop.

Gonna be crazy in Seattle on Monday...

All the flopping is so hard for me. Now, that dude did get his ankle stepped on pretty good, but they flop JUST LIKE THAT when they don't get stepped on. NBA has become the same way. In fact, NBA saw how it pays to flop from soccer. Kills me.
Not to take away from the elite athleticism in the game. Crazy skilled! Love the footwork and ball skills.
Just wish they wouldn't reward the flopping.

Pretty crazy US will play in Seattle on Monday. Go USA!

America FOR THE WINs....hell yeah!

I think he would have got away with it if he had been going for the ball, but he wasn’t anywhere near it. That elevates it from an ordinary foul to something that gets a card.

I am disappointed that there have not been more cards for diving. There was one in the first game and then nothing. The ref in the England game made it clear that he thought Harry Kane dived - so why didn’t Kane get a yellow? It won’t ever stop if there are no consequences.

Good win, tough call. Refs lost control in the first half letting Bosnia have at it, then overcompensated late. Sucks Balogun will be out next round.
Ref should’ve given the caution before the straight red…and it was after review! I don’t think it was the he “wasn’t going for the ball,” when you watch the play in real time it looked like it was just an unfortunate jostling, not intentional, reckless or malicious.

Also why did they have to show the dude’s ankle getting screwed 37 times during the VAR?
