Hotels, food, drinks, travel around town. Gimme a break. The entire hospitality industry is going to make money and that includes workers. Seattle will get tax revenue.
I'm a casual. Was it suprising? They looked dominant from the start.
Yes, it was surpring in many ways. The football pundits say that several records were broken or equaled by the US national team, among others:
* Scored 4 goals in a single World Cup game for the first time ever.
* Largest score margin: 4-1 win equaled the largest winning margin of victory in U.S. men's World Cup history since 1930.
* Balogun became the first USA player scoring multiple goals (two) in a single World Cup match since 1930. He was born to Nigerian parents visiting NYC, he would not be an American if Trump's birthright citizenship order was in place.
I was not around in 1930, when USA reached its best world cup run at third place, but for what it is worth the first 45 minutes were the most fluid, attacking, dominating and entertaining football I have ever seen a US national team play. Falgoun's second goal and Gio Reyna's last minute goal and 4th of the US were a thing of beauty, worth watching again. I have 4 successful adult children who grew up playing soccer starting at about 6-7. I have long been thankful for the lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship and selfless effort and humility that soccer instilled in them. It has served them well in life's challenges. You are certainly entitled to your read on the game but in the immortal words of a man much wiser than I, "opinions are a lot like assholes, everybody's got one."
I really tried to like soccer.
My father told me stories of being a soccer fanatic in Germany during the war. To please him I tried, really tried to watch soccer.
I even went to a Oakland Clippers professional soccer match in person....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Clippers. One of the few to watch professional soccer in the 1960's.
It is fine if you like soccer. And I do think parents should encourage their kids to run around and play soccer when they are young. It is healthy exercise for them.
That is fine if you like soccer. I know lots of people that prefer checkers to chess.
I am, however, bewildered why Americans would chose soccer over baseball, football, or god forbid basketball.

I used to think the same until recently when I witnessed pickleball.

The US played a terrific match. The defense we are a bit worried about was solid. Another record was set Friday night that to me was the most impressive of all. Chris Richards set a new WC record for the most passes completed with a 100% correct passing rate.
He was 83-83. For those of us who have played this sport and especially at a high level understand how insanely good that is. Richards is a freaking stud.
