Those will fish Fred! Tie a couple with a darker underbody. That long, shallow, skinny part of the closest hike in lake - put one of these on an indicator-less floating line and work the shoreline as you kick up the lake and back down the other side.

I've been going down more rabbit holes regarding internal fly/lure design. Last night I listened to a great podcast with Joe Goodspeed regarding musky fly design and how he basically observed how gear guys were crushing them on these Suick lures that were basically a piece of cylindrical wood where the differences in action was provided by balance and weight distribution. What they did, instead of just a walk the dog style, was that combined with a sideways slide that slowly righted itself on the pause. Kind of like a glide bait with that extra sideways movement to it. He accomplished this with the addition of foam on top of the shank (towards the back end), then a keel weight set further up the shank (1/3-2/3 up the shank).

Below is my iteration of such a thing. I kept it really simple until I can see how it behaves in the water (my foam is large enough where I can trim it down if necessary). I ended up tying in some foam on top of the tail (rather than the foam discs I have used in the past), and then partway (1/3 of the way down from eye to bend) up the hook shank, there's a 7/16 lead eye tied on the underside. Rather than coat the head with silicone like Joe does, I just made the head more dense (I used about 4x as much titan dubbing for the head than I normally do)....but you want a thick head to push that extra bit of water to draw in fish that may not be able to see the fly.

Awesome
I would love to see the innards of that beast.

What would you suggest Pat, brown, gray, olive or a blend of something?

I decided to add the silicone head with eyes to the other one and I'll leave this one as is (minus the extra foam--enough to where I can trim as necessary).

here's the head on the other one. I've gotta work on my technique for application as it's rather thick stuff (I don't want it to soak all of the way through).

Fucking cool
Thanks @clarkman
I like the eyes
thx,

on the original pattern, the silicone head is a little longer because it's tied on a 3" shank (and then the hook off the back via 2 split rings). My two are tied directly to the hook, so I didn't quite have the space to make the silicone portion longer. It's super flexible when dry, so as long as I end it a little before the hook bend, hookups shouldn't be an issue.

What is that stuff? Just silicone like caulking or some special fly stuff? I checked out that Joe G. guy. I’m going to follow him
Seems pretty smart

Never been a big fan of Chernobyl’s so I thought I’d make it a bit more palatable with a fuzzy head; tried one with rubber legs and it looked goofier than this does.

This looks like a great mouse pattern with a few changes.....

I was looking at a bunch of fly tying websites today and I concluded that this is the best site...this is the most diverse site...it's nuts...ScottP is an artist, clarkman has his style and 509 is making bait (in a good way)...Zak, Emerging, Brute, Scuddly, Billy, Rich S, Magill, Buzzy, Swimmy, EvanB, TomB...are tying awesome flies. Keep this going and if you felt like I left out someone please recognize them. There are great tyers here and I really appreciate what I have learned.

Baby PerchGill game changer

4.5" of good meat, two hooks with two articulations in between. These smaller ones tend to not have as much wiggle and instead roll more- a dying fish that's been mauled by something tends to jerk and roll violently before slowly sinking. Hard plastic jerkbaits do a great job of mimicking this; I fish these flies the same way, with a couple of erratic strips and then a pause, especially for bass.

I didn't blend the white and chartreuse as well as I woulda liked. Next time.
