What's in your vise?

I shoulda have done an SBS on this one since most of the differences lie underneath. I've been trying to figure out the best way to have excellent tail movement while maintaining an incredibly stiff tail (a little oxymoronic, right?). Reason being is that the stiffer the tail (if tied separately from the body), the more it will cause the front end to jack-knife (although, that's also tied to how "loose" the tail section is as well--tighter=more swim-bait like action; looser=more jerk-bait like action). I'm trying to find that perfect combination.

So, with that being said, I ended up tying the tail onto a shank attached to 40lb wire to the back end of my 4/0 TP610. This provides the stiffer portion. On the shank, I used Icelandic sheep (hand stacked to about 6"), reverse bullet tied that in to provide the overall length, then a Finn Raccoon collar around that. Between that (Finn) trash panda and the sheep, I've got the crazy good movement. Then, the front is just bucktail, flash....rinse and repeat with a Titan dubbed head. Hope Y'all enjoy my thought process and the final product of said process.

Cheers!

Tied in this size to use as a short-wing stonefly so this should actually be called a Stonehog. Again, added a strip of foam on the top of the body for a bit more buoyancy because I plan to fish this in pretty rough water.

I'll admit I like the looks of this pattern, but from a tying standpoint rather than a fish(erman) standpoint. I watched the video, and I don't quite get the reasoning of the curved shank, or the triple wingcase...which at the adult/spent female stage should be non-existent.

I tied some of this style 4 or 5 years ago from MFC, I believe the Goulds Half Down Skwala. I tied half a dozen of sz. 8 and 10 each. Gave them multiple shots and I don't think I ever had a rise on them. Still have a few in my box that haven't been fished for 3 years or so now.

Stoneflies, at least from my observation, don't dip there ass in the water to drop their eggs. They may wiggle a bit, but I don't see their bodies dip in to submerge thir egg sac.

In any case, sweet tie and pictures as always. I have just had better luck on straight shank Skwalas. I'd be super curious if anyone has had any luck on this type of (curved shank, submerged ass) Skwala.
