Found the golden pheasant (red&gold feathers) by-the-yard on Etsy (along with ringneck rump and chukar); get about 100 feathers/yard, the quality is good and size is consistent for the muddlers I tie (size 6-10). A much cheaper option than buying a whole skin.

hook - WFC Model 21 #6
thread - SemperFli Nano Silk 30d black
tag - medium tinsel opal
rib - small wire silver
body - fox squirrel dubbing
hackles - ginger/grizzly
shoulder - golden pheasant body red
collar/head - deer hair

Regards,
Scott

I kind of slacked off tying last year. Had our spare room set up to tie last winter, then did a interior remodel. My daughter moved back into spare room half way into the remodel so I never got it painted/trimmed. She moved back out and the room sort of stayed stagnant.

Happy to report I finally got room trimmed out and painted!

Hey Billy,

These look very fishy. Can you share a little about where you use these and the presentation?

Cheers, WR

This time of year i'm fishing slow creeks and drainage ditches. I generally throw them a few feet under an indicator. I let the current take the flies down. Sometimes throw a few twitches in.

In lakes I'll use them from a few feet down under an indicator all the way to 30 feet down with a type 7. Just depends where I find the bite. It's a deadly pattern!

My "Throw Back Thursday" fly this week Brad's Brat
The steelhead fly Brad's Brat was developed by Enos Bradner sometime around 1937. Bradner lived in the Seattle area where he owned a bookstore and was also an author. He developed Brad's Brat mainly for the Stillaguamish River and then later used it with very good success on many other rivers throughout Washington and Oregon. This still ranks as one of the top flies in the NW and can be found in every single fly shop in Washington and Oregon.

I watched my nephew land a nice Steelhead on the D using this very pattern. Coincidentally his name is Brad. Nice tie.

Hey, guys, Norm might not be posting for a while. Caught him on another site, he's having major eye issues that impact his tying. Hoping he posts up here about it, too.
Wishing him well. Hope to see hiss ties again soon!!

Notional. The partridge may be a bit overpowering; might try a smaller dyed grizzly hen.

thread - SemperFli 8/0 black
butt - yarn yellow/red (loop dubbed)
rib - small wire silver
body - hare’s ear dyed black
hackle - red/black
1st shoulder - golden pheasant body dyed black (1 Tbs Rit Dark Brown/1 cup water overdyed with 1 Tbs Rit Black/1 cup water)
2nd shoulder - partridge dyed deep red (1 1/2 Tsp Rit Scarlet, 1/2 Tsp Rit Golden Yellow/2 cups water)

Scott

Ok, I think I'm warmed up for the big fly swap...my swap flies are gonna have a slightly longer front shank, however.

Sorry....had to do it.

If the Broncos win the SB, I'm fishing this fly all year for tigers....

edit: AND, I'll only fish it on my Broncos themed NFC 8' 10wt glass rod....
