Here’s a sequence from a fly I tied a while back. For thread, I’d use something like Danville 6/0 or Semperfli 8/0; Uni 8/0 is a bitch to split and I hate UTC 70 - way too flossy (only exception is in Woodduck; absolutely love that color).

split thread, insert aftershaft feather, spin, moisten, stroke it back and wrap

Doing it in a thread loop works, too, but there’s much less buildup with the split-thread.

Hope this helps,
Scott
Thanks very much!!

I really like this fly @Brute, it brings back memories. I met the originator of the pattern on a bridge looking down into the Chiloquin River (1977-ish). I bought a couple of his flies from a storefront that day. I didn't have a fly rod, poor college kid, but I did have a vise, some hooks and a few materials. I used a spinning rod, clear plastic bubble and "fly fished" some of the local rivers that way. Thanks, nicely done!

Scott, how big of a piece of caribou do you dye with one Koolaid packet & one cup of water?

Also, am I correct in guessing you’re using the microwave ?

thanx in advance,

Mike d

Mike, it was about a 2”x2” piece; could do something bigger but this was a test to see how well it dyed. Here’s an SBS on my dyeing process; for substrate like deer/elk/caribou/etc, I would also consider using a hotplate and coffee carafe instead of a microwave to maintain a lower but more consistent temperature over a longer period of time so as not to damage the hair.

Regards,
Scott
