What's in your vise?

So... I tied this wigglebug about a year & a half ago with searuns in mind. This particular 2.5" tie swims perfectly, with a side-to-side wiggle and undulating tail at a range of stripping/trolling speeds. After many SRC and a couple of nice coho, it was pretty chewed up:

So I gave it a coat of chewy flexy UV resin.

Since then, it has caught dozens and dozens of bows, cutts, LM, SM, various sunfish, and perch. And is losing its hair. After a dozen of these jumbo 2lb stockers the other day, I figured I better try to replicate it before I lose it!

Went ahead and coated them right off the bat this time:

Then tied a few varieties. Bottom one smaller and in searun peach. And since they shake and sometimes roll, I integrated rattles in a couple more - buried in the synthetic bunny under the black one's "chin", and threaded onto a furled micro squishenille tail on the green one

Hopefully these will get some play in a couple lakes & some salt this week!

Cool flies! I’ll have to try this pattern, do you fish it on a floater?

Is that a bead or resin at the hook eye to help prevent the foam from going forward, and is the tail craft fur? I'm going to plagiarize this tie...

Thanks - yeah, I love this one, too!
I believe it was originated by Larry Tullis - the Tullis Wiggle Bug. I just switched to bunny for the tail because I prefer the action of that over marabou

I fish it on everything from a floater to a type 8. On a floater it acts like a diver - very effective as a frog pattern for bass.
On a sinking line it swims like a sand lance, but floats upwards on a pause like a Booby does.

Yes, I've done both. You can actually see that the "one" here originally had a glass bead, but it shattered at some point. (I think I crushed it wrestling it out of a bass maw.) A resin/cement covered thread bump works, too. Although if you keep the angle of the head a bit flatter, it stays in place by itself.
I like bunny for the tail - either natural or synthetic - but Tullis's original was marabou. Bunny is more durable; I've had marabou tails ripped right off! A tail of kreelex-type flash can be good, too.

Wiggler.jpg I've been singing the praises of this fly for years, to mostly deaf ears. There seems to be a stigma attached. Work quite well in rivers and lakes for Bass, Sea Runs and Salmon. I fish it on a sinking line. The retrieve makes it dive. It floats up slowly when slack. In rivers, it stays down but hovers above the bottom mostly. A tiny barrel swivel prevents twisting... I like it better than a gurgler, but a rolled/marabou/bead head muddler still wins for regular trout...

Love it - and yours are so much prettier!

I'm definitely not a purist, and don't much care about "stigmas," lol! If it's weight/density means it casts more easily on a fly line than with a spinning rod... it's a fly.
My favorite lure when I was a kid in MN was a Lazy Ike, and they made them in "fly rod" sizes, so why not? Watching it swim makes me happy 😊
(And yep - all my sinking and popper lines have a tiny swivel integrated into the leader.)

Based on Arthur Macdonald’s Smudge. Head shape not quite what I’m looking for (may try razor blade), need larger tinsel for splitter on hook this size and the shoulder is a bit lumpy (strip fibers on one side for next fly).

hook - TMC 2457 #8
thread - SemperFli Nanosilk 30d black
tag - Orvis Saltwater thread fluoro orange/resin
rib - small wire copper
body - UV-X ET dubbing cinnamon
shoulder - mottled hen back
indicator - yarn flame
splitter - medium tinsel opal
collar/head - deer hair

Regards,
Scott

Finished off my supply of 10/0 hooks this morning.

Had one of my earlier efforts that I didn't like much so I cut off everything but the bucktail and flash. Added a few wings of SF blend and a big piece of foam. 🤞

There must be a large discrepancy in hook sizes amongst the various hook manufacturer's...I used to build trolling lures in Hawaii using 10/0 & 11/0 Mustad hooks for ahi & marlin...I would only be able to fit two or three of them on the palm of my hand...of course your hand may be approaching the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk...

I have fairly large hands - the flies are around 7 inches long
