Hi @Bagman,Steve for dummies like me what does the do to our albacore fishing next week, if the weather doesn’t put us in the camp grounds that is?
Probably nothing. The satellites detect the reflectance of sunlight off the ocean surface, typically less than a millimeter of penetration. Therefore, that can be just the thinnest veneer of warm water at the surface and you would have no idea the temperature below that millimeter, but it most likely is cooler. But you can't tell how much cooler from a satellite.
Normally, the waters that we fish is to the west of the upwelling zone, in the clear blue low-nutrient water that has been pushed offshore by the winds. During the recent warm weather and apparent downwelling, you can not use satellites to find the edge between the colder surface water (green, high-nutrient) and the more typical offshore waters.
