Tuna 2022, let the games begin!

Steve for dummies like me what does the do to our albacore fishing next week, if the weather doesn’t put us in the camp grounds that is?
Hi @Bagman,
Probably nothing. The satellites detect the reflectance of sunlight off the ocean surface, typically less than a millimeter of penetration. Therefore, that can be just the thinnest veneer of warm water at the surface and you would have no idea the temperature below that millimeter, but it most likely is cooler. But you can't tell how much cooler from a satellite.
Normally, the waters that we fish is to the west of the upwelling zone, in the clear blue low-nutrient water that has been pushed offshore by the winds. During the recent warm weather and apparent downwelling, you can not use satellites to find the edge between the colder surface water (green, high-nutrient) and the more typical offshore waters.

edit- N/M, this was a useless post, but here’s something to chew on—the sea surface temperature does not necessarily reflect the temperature or even the same chlorophyll levels as at what is at depth, and the albacore can be down there in some water more to their liking. At that point, can trolling bring them up? Are we running over and past catchable tuna?

I am starting to nerd out. In case you want to join me here are some videos -

Thanks for posting that. Gives me a whole new resource to explore.

It so nice to have you to inform us of what this type of information means at least I’m great full to have you and many others to keep us domas’s informed. I’m sorry I need interpretation but I’m fun to be around🫠

And today, just as @Nick Clayton is about to give the "That's all folks." announcement, my friend hooks up yet another stubborn albacore that took quite a while to subdue. But it eventually joined 22 of its brethren in the ice bath. Nick always give FULL VALUE.

That last fish was really a great surprise. What a day we had! Thanks to Cabezon for organizing, it was awesome fishing with you guys. I've done two "Nick trips" now, both have been outstanding.

Alright here's a 1st legit attempt at a mini saury school imitation. I'll admit this was a bit of a PITA to construct. But, now that it's done I'm really not seeing how this would be problematic to cast or retrieve. Total material and weight is less than a typical baitfish pattern I'd use for albacore. Also not seeing any way this would tangle. The decoys are attached via loop connection on stiff 20# FC tags that are secured with thread wraps and flexible UV resin.

I may actually fish this if they are eating small saury. 3x the attraction while still matching the hatch.

Last Wednesday, I definitely had what I can only describe as two incidents of short strikes. Twice, something grabbed my fly but did not hook up and then a few second later one of the other rods hooked up. It seems to me that you might have created a massive opportunity for short-strikes as only one of the three will result in a hookup. But we will see on Tuesday.

Very well could be a short strike apparatus.

Always surprises me when we have short strikes, taps, ticks, etc... out there. I'm hoping (if it works) this will trigger an inhale response trying to eat the whole thing at once. In that case it could be a one fish per set up thing.

Maybe I'll lurk around the dock tomorrow and Tues. I'm on a gear trip on Wednesday but I'll be surfing until then.

Really solid day with Nick today, @jasmillo @DimeBrite anh I gave away a lot of tuna tonight.
Had many doubles and several triples. Ocean condition was good too, no where crazy like last year's trip.

I got most of fish on the spawn head stinger, and one fish of this 6in squid near the end.
Squiddie was swallowed almost all the way in.

Nice work! What retrieves were working? Especially interested in deets on the squiddo eat.

Weather permitting I'll be out there Thursday and Saturday. Can't wait!

Was trolling the squid when jasmillo and Dimebrite got a double. I reeled then stripped the squid in slowly and that's when it got eaten. I would guess it as around 5ft below at that point.

Really enjoy following along on the Tuna Quest. Good going guys!
