Show me your bass

First outing of the year last weekend, I caught my PB largemouth and yellow perch, that perch is the biggest I've personally seen in my area. Both caught on the same clouser I tied this winter! That bass is officially my first fish on a fly I tied myself.

Fished a new to me lake with @Kfish from our tubes today. Pretty slow early, fishing shallow water I like to target with flies. Only a couple to hand. Eventually Lou found them out deep off a point and there was pretty consistent fishing the rest of the morning. Unfortunately, tough to target with a fly rod, even with an I/3/5 line but they enjoyed chomping a swim bait dragged slowly across the bottom. I was ok with that, they’ll be up shallow soon enough. Not yet though. Truck thermometer said 34 when we starting fishing at 6 am.

Decided to brave the cold, drizzly weather to get after some spring smallmouth as they move into the creeks and rivers from the lakes.

Not really the temperature you’re looking for on May 1st.

Hiked down into the creeks and cast a bright clouser variation into the first deep run. Right in front of a big boulder this one came to play. The grab and initial head shakes made me think I might have found a steelhead kelt but I was stoked to catch my first smallmouth.

Worked my way downstream casting to deep pockets near big boulders as there was a bunch of shallow fast water. Was walking a high bank and flipped the fly behind a boulder and twitched it back. A fish grabbed it but didn’t come tight. I cast it right back and this larger one came back for it. Cool watching the grab.

Kept exploring downstream enjoying the sights of Spring on the water.

Had one other grab but couldn’t stay connected. Decided to head back upstream to the car.

Even some lilacs were blooming alongside the trail.

I have a feeling there’s gonna be a bunch of smallmouth fishing this summer.

Smallmouth are the best! Stream smallmouth, even better.
