Puget Sound

Awesome. Looks like someone slipped into my spot. Was out this evening. There were some cutts in the shallows. Lots of bait.
Been lookin’ for you out there. Only been a couple times for a few hours early early. Yep, lots and lots of bait. Maybe next time!

Thanks for having me out @Nick Clayton. That was a ton of fun. 12 hours of fishing went by in a flash. I’ve caught plenty of pinks incidentally off the beach but never targeted them specifically from the boat. Some of the best see a fish, cast to a fish, hook a fish fishing I’ve ever experienced on the sound. What a blast. Thanks again for an awesome day!
Run-n-gun. For me, this is one of the ultimate fly fishing experiences. It’s kind of like hunting, but with schools of pinks, maybe more like jump shooting ducks? I don’t know, it’s its own thing and it’s a blast. Glad you got to do that and get into ‘em.

Tried a few beaches up here in Qualicum bay but nothing around. Locals said there were some pods of pinks passed through here a couple of days ago, but none around this morning.
Some of these beaches are so fishy but not even Cutts around.

Decent action on the beach today. Fished about 7 hours and went 7-11 on keeper sized fish. Missed some other plucks with no solid hookups. The first light bite ended up being typical July rezzie sized fish. Later some nicer fish came through. There were also some pinks mixed in as well.

In the end, I able to bring home some decent coho for the freezer.

Got a late start due to the Sunday ferry schedule and couldn’t fish very late due to family obligations.
Ended up going 4 for 8 with one coho, one silver, one humpy and one pink landed.
Good to see @jasmillo out there roping some nice fish as usual.
Nice to meet you @Grandpa Jim and nice job landing some good fish as well.
Some of the coho today were more plump then the standard issue rezzies we’ve been catching.

My leader the other day was getting torn up a couple inches from the fly. I assume this was from all the nips I felt in-between getting a fish to stick.

Is that a fixable thing in the saltwater coho game? Was running size 4 flys with eyes a fair bit back, maybe I should run a longer shanked hook?

That seems odd. What brand of leader material and lb test are you using?
Could you be dinging the beach with your back cast and are you demolishing any flies while fishing?

13lb test, SA Absolute. You know after you mentioned dinging the beach I sort of feel stupid 🥴 that is likely it. Only other thing I could think of is the seaweed balls that tend to slide down to my fly. I always try to cast them off, double hauling the Skagit head with speed as if I’m on meth.

this is not for Stonedfish but Divad.
Try a stringer fly, tho I have no personal experience using a long shank hooks being a problem I took the advice of those with much more experience than I have. You also might want to buy some Maxama green in 20 lb test. Un like some other fish coho don’t seem to be leader shy.

You coho cohort are giving me some serious FOMO, especially when it's still early for them up here on Vancouver island.
Got my salty fix this evening in Tofino, biggest surf perch I've ever seen, and they are plentiful too.

Many back to back fish when you find that sweet spot, caught over a dozen of them until a surfer guy and his sons from Newfoundland came over to check out the action.
He wanted to try so I showed him to strip and handle line in the basket, his casting wasn't bad at all getting that shooting head out.
Took about ten minutes, it was fun as hell watching him get his first fish :)

That last photo is legendary lol

Finally got into some Vancouver Island coho this morning at Tofino. Went way out to the rock point thanks to the lower outgoing tide, would not risk this for an incoming :)
Saw one fish jumped and several casts later hooked this one. Landed it in a tide pool behind me with a wave surge.

Second fish was funny, I dumped out the shooting head in the water and started to strip out more running line (after reeling in the first) and saw line started going out. Grabbed the line and went tight to a hot one that gave many hot runs around the rock and kelp.

Pretty cool scenery to boot!

Very very nice!
I can see where a kayak or canoe could be deadly effective.

Tofino is like Waikiki Beach if you're from Newfoundland.
