NFR Oscars: Smith vs. Rock

Yeah, there are probably lots like me that did not watch the Oscars but I have been interested in the slap from Smith to Rock from a sociological perspective. My take on it was both were wrong and both probably owe the other an apology (apparently Smith later apologized to Rock). I find a lot of the comments from those richer and more famous than I interesting. On one hand, we should never poke fun at another's misfortune (especially a medical condition) while on the other hand, there is never an excuse for violence. In the past, if someone offended your wife, it was considered appropriate to defend her honor with a slap to the face or worse a duel with pistols at noon. But now, most in Hollywood are saying chivalry is dead and violence in any form cannot be tolerated. I just find it all kind of interesting to see how things have changed over time.

I did not find the joke funny at all as did most in the audience thought ironically, Smith appeared to laugh though it is not known whether it was a pity laugh or not. Both actions were probably over the line. And then having to go up and give an acceptance speech? Awkward!

So I find myself wondering which is worse: verbally making fun of a women with a medical condition or a man slapping another man for trying to, in essence, defend her honor?

Some could care less I'm sure and others are undoubtedly wondering what the heck I'm talking about. But I do find the topic interesting and am curious what regular people like me think about it.

Sorry... I don’t consider the playing field even with Hollywood... they draw themselves into the limelight and pick their alliances with whatever causes. Chris Rock is and always will be Chris Rock... funny, controversial, edgy. Maybe he could have picked a different joke... who knows. Point is he’s a comedian... Will Smith overreacted.... should he be blacklisted? Hell no... he just had a lapse in judgement. In the mean time I’ll leave this.9F84BB95-6457-42C4-B5D9-5203B9685F51.jpeg

Word is that Chris Rock didn't know about her medical condition. Even if she didn't have that condition and just shaved her head, it wasn't really a funny joke simply because there were what, 5 people in that room who have even seen the movie G.I. Jane...and they were probably in it.

Also, every comedian worth anything has a joke or two that completely bombs or is tone-deaf....I'm guessing he won't be using that material anytime soon.

We've seen this before too....too soon?

Dude had it coming.
I tend to agree. Sometimes the appropriate amounts of violence is a good answer.
Slapping someone makes a point.. if the intent was to cause harm he would have used a fist.

And hell. It's the oscars... who wouldn't be in a violent mood sitting there for hours watching those people fawn over eachother for their really poor quality entertainment.

I don’t watch shows like the Oscars. I haven’t watched a movie in over twenty years so why would I watch the Oscars. I haven’t seen anything Smith has made including tv shows. I have never seen Rock perform anywhere. I have no opinion on whether they are talented or not. I seen the ‘slap’ on the news. My thought was privileged black men act just like privileged white men.

One other thing I seen on the news was Lady Gaga whispering “I got you.” to Lisa Minnelli when she seemed confused. This is something I appreciate and I will remember.

Chris Rock definitely had it coming and it is a bit of a shame that Will Smith is getting so much fall out from it even after his earnest( acting) apology. Folks in that much lime light are targets. Insulting anyones wife on a world wide stage is the foulest of the foul imo. But then I can have an opinion about things that don’t matter a hill of beans…except perhaps to the starving people of the world for the sensationalized.

The real culprit behind this publicity stunt is Jada. Despite whatever agreement they had with open relationships she cvcked her husband and publicly humiliated him on her podcast with him present. Irrationally acting out to save face and be a "man" defending his wife's "honor" was a poor decision to try and regain some sort of masculinity for whatever deeper pain had been inflicted. Imagine that, a woman the root cause between two men fighting? 🙄

There is lots of shit people say that I don't like. If I slapped someone for that reason I would go to jail. Will Smith should have been arrested on the spot. He is a man baby throwing a tantrum.
Do you feel that the days of a man having a moral obligation to defend his wife's honor are gone? Some say Will Smith could have handled it better, probably. Well, Mr Smith is human. So is Chris Rock. We witnessed something that has been occurring since the beginning of time.
I respectfully disagree on the notion that Mr Smith should have been arrested on the spot. I don't like this type of thought process. Police are too busy dealing with much bigger deal things than a man in a tux who just lost his temper and open palmed slapped another man for disrespecting his wife.
Big mouths should still be held accountable through the universal language of a good ass kicking more often in this world. Where they can take an inch they will take a mile.
I used to be a very big thoughtless smart ass. I will always always remember my father warning me when i was 15 to get my shit together cause my mouth was going to get the shit kicked out of me when I turn 21 and start running my mouth to a bigger dude who has 3 good stiff drinks in him.

I learned before getting myself in a situation where I got my own face slapped. Why? Because the idea of getting my ass kicked never sounds fun so I feel that keeping my mouth shut and jokes to myself is a more self entertaining and less painful way to go. Some do not learn this.

Looked staged to me.

Chris Rock stuck his face forward for the wrestling type slap in the face.

Lots of publicity for The Oscars which had been languishing for multiple years.

After all, they are actors!

I have just changed my opinion on the whole thing...

It's absolutely none of my business. It is not my place to have an opinion on a matter between two people neither of which is me.

Chris Rock is a comedian. He was hired to do that sort of shit. That could have been scripted for him by the writers.
Victim blaming is easy though.....

I'm 50/50 staged and or Smith emotional outburst, but hey everyones talking about it, which was the end goal.

Rob yours and my opinions don’t count for anything and for not giving a damn as i said I gave an opinion…I wish i had not looked at this thread.

Thats your opinion, and I respect it. However, do you feel that being a Comedian gives you a pass to speak however want? To put it in context, this was not a Chris Rock show that Mr. Smith was attending that would be different. This was a social gathering among other peers. Whoever you want to place blame or throw in handcuffs is all up to you. I feel that any person man or woman should always have the moral obligation and right to defend oneself and most importantly to defend others that cannot defend themselves. :)
