This next part is more serious, and an example of what we know re brain trauma. In the epilepsy world there are people who get seizures after brain injury. There are people who have the exact same brain injury and don't ever get epilepsy. When you work backwards the group that got seizures are way more likely to have a defect in a gene with the worst/best acronym in medicine MTHFR. There are other genes they may also have in common, but that MTHFR gene has a workaround whereas most genes have no therapy for them when they don't work. MTHFR helps methylate B-group vitamins B12 and Folate. That methylation of those vitamins enables cell division and repair strategies. Specifically protein production and DNA production. Many of us have one copy that's weird and about 1/9 have two copies that are weird. So it is a really common gene variant to be less efficient at what it helps do. Most of the time that inefficiency doesn't matter, at least until you have dangerous injury or time of stress (pregnancy, sepsis, brain injury, stroke). The reason it is super fascinating is there are methylated versions of B12 and Folate that are cheap and easily available that bypass what the MTHFR gene was supposed to do. The notion that a safe straightforward and cheap methylated version of B12 and Folate might be important in diminishing burdens of brain injury remains to studied in a good prospective trial.
Given side effects of B12 and Folate low dose are virtually zero, and they are water soluble vitamins you pee out any excess of, If I was a football player, or had brain traumas with any regularity, I would be popping low dose Methyl B12 and Methylfolate every day.
First, fascinating information from @Wadin' Boot . I will need to read more about that protein. At some point in the near future, your GP will take a blood sample for a whole-genome sequencing and analysis. This analysis will highlight your individual risks for specific medical conditions, such as breast cancer, Alzheimers, diabetes, etc. due to the genes that you inherited. Lacking specific alleles for these disorders does not mean that you cannot acquire mutations to genes during your life to finally have these conditions, but if you inherited a mutated gene or two, you are more likely to accumulate mutations that will triggers these conditions.Or.....don't look for work that entails head trauma on a daily basis.
