Mean People!

My story:
Scouting local , like within 2 miles of me, parks and lakes to take the kid fishing for sunfish and maybe zombie stockers . Get to Lake Geneva, park in the Park Lot, walk to the lake and walk the bank. Umm, has potential, but needs to be fished from a boat (various reasons) .

Did I mention this is also one of those "lowland public lakes" wdfw and king county is so proud of that is surrounded by houses?

Anyway, I make my way left , south, along the west bank of the lake. I'm still on public park/ wdfw access, and this obese, chalk white, red head comes screaming out of her pseudo McMansion yelling she's called the cops, (deputy sherrif) I'm trespassing and causing property damage.. Who? Me? I just got here.

I sit down on a nearby park bench and wait . (I have book marked acess reg pages and county park maps on my phone) Text the wife , tell her whats going on. She calls the Federal Way cops after hanging up with me, she's so pissed.

I hear cars slamming to a halt out in the parking lot. Then a few minutes later, two Federal Way cops show up. They ask me whats going on, i tell them i'm out scouting county parks to take my kid fishing and the fat lady? she might be singing, but its the wrong tune.
I point out that the lake is part of a public park, and also point out all the marker buoys and personal water toys encroaching into public waters. Meanwhile, Big Red is having hysterics because i'm calmly pointing out access violations and the cops arent even talking to her. Eventually the deputy shows up. We go over all of it again. She still claims property rights on public access. Deputy tells her i have every right to be there. She throws a fit and stomps off into her house.

I didnt take my kid fishing there. We went to 5 Mile Lake instead.

Man...I had one of these experiences a few years back. There are definitely a few A-hole property owner's. There are also a few A-hole fishermen out there. Fortunately, for every negative interaction I have had with a few of these folks, I have had 50 positive interactions.

I think you guys hit on part of it. Several of the landowners have had issues with fisherman, breaking stuff, littering, climbing over fences, and sometimes even poaching, but usually it's partiers nearer an access that leave a mess. "Back in the day" most folks let fishers pass freely, you needed permission to hunt. More recent past history has made it so they would just rather it shut off, and being rude will deter most folks.
A few of these owners now invite me to park in their driveways, so as not to show use. Saves me a long walk, up to a mile in the river sometimes too.

Guess it depends on your parts.. most Pennsylvanians (he's from the Philly area) hate his azz becuase they feel he gives a bad representation of "their parts"
When he won the elites on the Delaware River the home crowd was frigging awesome...guess not all hate him😁sddefault.jpgThe guy had some anger issues early on in his career and I think that is where some of these lingering false(imho) generalizations come from. He does a ton for charity now and getting kids involved in fishing. His foundation is great:

“Are you hurting our chum?” Asked while fishing a Seattle city park beach…..in August.

“My dad said it is illegal to fish here”….nothing like sending your 7-8 year old kid to do your dirty work. Same park as above. Dad won’t come down from the top of the train track bridge when I waved him down.

“You can’t fish around my dock. Your hooks will stick my kids”….no kids present.
I explain I’m fishing a floating “lure”. Popper actually and I could easily recover it if it came off. She wasn’t having it.

If you really want to see them flip out, ask to see proof that they own the property they claim is theirs. How do you know? Just because someone claims they are the landowner is certainly not proof that they are... really, really winds them up.

I was walking to the river through the woods one time, just me and my fly pole, and I came across a guy walking with his dog. I said hi and he mean mugged me and told me I was on his property. I apologized and said I'd leave. Then he told me he would shoot me. I thought that was pretty mean.

We've really gotten somewhere on this fly fishing site if we're using "who likes a bassmaster guy" as a vector to bicker amongst ourselves.
I could stir the pot madly with my thoughts on that . I'll excercise discretion and withold that comment.

Yeah, cuz trespass is always cause for summary execution. "Some people!"

This is the ugly side of our community. An ongoing character problem of individuals speaking ill will of others behind their backs. I would appreciate if we can rise above things like this and just simply stay on topic, crack a beer open and BS about things other than tearing someone or something down. But hey hide behind your freedom of speech thing all ya want i guess. Some of you folks really need to take up smoking weed.

Ok, Daniel, I'll play;
So, as for the lady who called the cops on me for looking at fishing possibilities on public waters overseeing by county and city, she's in the wrong.

Also, its a felony in this state to interfere with those legally and peacefully in the acts of hunting and fishing. Slight turn of circumstances, she could have been arrested.

Regarding Mr. Iconelli? Due to his participation in a publicly followed "sport" , the man also is fair game to people's personal opinions of his conduct. Some might laud his actions, and his screaming. I don't.

However, I'm not going to stalk and attack the man physically, or start a QAnon style slander campaign against him, because, simply, thats walking into legalities i dont want to deal with, and its just plain wrong. I've simply stated what i know to be true based on interactions with those residents of the place he is from.

Sometimes there are other factors at play.

I had to basically give up on one of my favorite runs. I would access the water legally, cross the river and then hike the gravel bar, waaaay below high water mark, to the top and start fishing. I did this for a couple seasons before I ever got yelled at, then one day a guy came out of his house from across the river and started going berserk. I knew I was legal so I calmly explained to him how I got there. Not good enough, he called the sheriff. Sheriff came, got my side of the story and said I was legal and to leave me alone. Couple weeks later the exact same scenario, even the same deputy. Once again, guy was told I was okay and to leave me alone.
Gave that spot a rest for the season but the next fall gave it a go again. Before I even started fishing the guy comes running out. he had put up cameras and was going to show the cops! Well, fine by me. Sheriff comes, same guy as last year and he remembered the deal. Offered to write the guy up for harassment. I said no, just please get him to stop. Sheriff leaves and guy starts driving up and down the road pointing at me. Super weird. Eventually he goes home and I finish fishing. As I'm standing at my truck derigging a nice old couple pulls out of the closest driveway. They stop and ask if so and so has been giving me a hard time. I tell them the scoop. They apologize, the guy was their son who lived on the corner of their property. Turns out the guy was a Vietnam vet and had mental issues. That just sucks all the way around and I definitely don't want to trigger the poor guy so I gave up that spot.

But man do I miss that run.
