This week I brought my 8 and 12 weight to Kona for a layover, and my search for GTs was pleasantly interrupted by this fella. I knew they were rare, and shortly after I ran into a Marine Mammal Conservation volunteer whom had relocated a few years ago from UK. He explained that there were only 13 of these Monk Seals inhabiting the Big Island and one had recently given birth. I then asked him about the population on Midway (on my bucket list to fish if I ever mechanical divert on our way to or from Guam) and he stated that there approximately 1400 between there and French Sholes, to which I replied “a buffet for Tigers.” His response in a British accent, “it’s more like Golden Corral for the Tigers.” Gave me a good laugh. Sorry about the photo quality.
