KOA Layover

This week I brought my 8 and 12 weight to Kona for a layover, and my search for GTs was pleasantly interrupted by this fella. I knew they were rare, and shortly after I ran into a Marine Mammal Conservation volunteer whom had relocated a few years ago from UK. He explained that there were only 13 of these Monk Seals inhabiting the Big Island and one had recently given birth. I then asked him about the population on Midway (on my bucket list to fish if I ever mechanical divert on our way to or from Guam) and he stated that there approximately 1400 between there and French Sholes, to which I replied “a buffet for Tigers.” His response in a British accent, “it’s more like Golden Corral for the Tigers.” Gave me a good laugh. Sorry about the photo quality.

There's a fat one that hauls out and naps at Poipu Kauai

They put a little temp fence around it to keep us touristos away

I tripped over one years ago on Makua beach while backing up fighting a big oio (bonefish) on a surf rod

That’s a cool sighting. Certainly different from what I was intrigued by the thread title where I was wondering what kind of a layover would involve a trip to a Kampground of America (KOA).

We saw a couple on the trip we just wrapped to Kauai. I’ve never seen them on the Big Island but have on Kauai and Maui before this trip.

Sorry for the poor quality photos as well (IPhone).
