Hunting pictures

It was interesting how red/almost translucent the antlers were, they have already dried a bit and lost a lot of that initial color

While the bird numbers weren't the best, Montana still never disappoints. Spent six nights last week sleeping out of the back of the truck with most of those nights dipping below freezing and gusts up to 40 mph. Still, we've marked our calendars for next year. This was a hunting trip, not a shooting trip. Given the low quantity of birds, it's good to have an exceptional dog. The sheer number of rock solid points that I witnessed still brings a smile to my face. I only saw one group of sharptails over head at the end of a long day, which was a big change from previous years. I did see more Huns than before, but they're more of an opportunity, so I was happy to get just the one. Roosters were slim and weary, while hens were everywhere. I treated the dog to a well deserved hotel room on the way home. Feels like living in an Ivan Doig novel.

(Photo from a couple weeks ago before the season opened) This guy remains safe (at least from me) for another year. Last day of the season today, and my opportunity never materialized. Had access to my friend's property to hunt this meadow and neighboring public land really only accessible (feasibly) from his and a few other private properties. This shot here is the bull right in the middle of the meadow he owns.

Unfortunately, he had some friends needing a place to park their RV for a few weeks while their house finished up. So they were out daily walking their dogs and hiking around in the woods... not exactly conducive for me setting up to intercept an elk herd.

Elk tag soup is on the menu!

Our youngest daughter Jess and her hubby went waterfowl hunting at Klamath Basin NWR a few days ago. Not only did she harvest her first ever Canada goose - it was also banded!

That’s awesome! Congrats dad and daughter! Great family heirloom with the band!
