No need to bring that up please. Enough hard working, lower income people, among others, as well as those that protect our country and constitution are going to be impacted that do not deserve to be for no good reason and/or for piss poor reasons completely out of their control. They all deserve better from our legislators that are supposed to represent their constituents.

Edited to add: the number of families and their children that depend on assistance from the government for meals, housing, Healthcare will also be impacted through no fault of their own are on the verge of homelessness. No need to add to that for sure...

Yeah, contractors lose during shutdowns, unless you're one of the exceptions like you indicate. Federal employees don't exactly get a free vacation. They do get paid for the time off, but can't really plan to use it as vacation time because you're required to be ready to report back to work the next day, or the next day, etc. If vacation consists of doing yard work or painting the living room, then yes, it's kind of like a vacation. The uncertainty prevents most federal workers from treating the furlough as a vacation. And there is always the possibility that this time Congress won't reinstate back pay.

It's really the taxpayers that get screwed during a government shutdown. Agencies have to spend the week before the prospective shutdown planning and making arrangements regarding the shutdown, calling everyone I had upcoming meetings scheduled with that I might not be able to attend. Shutdowns generate a lot of waste.

The key part is "to be able to report back to work the next day." So hell yes its a free vacation. You can go fish, hunt, play golf. etc. Lots of true vacation things you can do and still be able to be back to work the next day. And the fact is you can bank that once a shutdown occurs that you could easily take a several day trip since they never resolve a shutdown for a few days. And worst case scenario. They do call you back and you are away. No big deal. Just take some of your "real" paid vacation.
