Is BP still a thing? I've always thought it looked like fun, but I have a hard time bringing myself to drive past the D that time of year.
I have been to a half dozen or so. I have built two of the prams to be burned- both rather elaborate. It still is an event that is not talked much about. PhilR it is a great BP family who are welcoming… show up set up camp and walk around and visit folks then you will figure it out

Man, I remember being caught in a shutdown in 78 or 79 as a soldier stationed in Germany. We were on an exercise at Graf, staying in Camp Aachen, when the news came over AFN.

Everything immediately shut down and we stopped doing anything except essential tasks like cooking and cleaning. Otherwise, stuck in the barracks mostly reading or playing cards. Literally had no money for fuel to return to Aschaffenburg . Ended up stranded in Graf an extra week. Had to turn in a light bulb to get a light bulb. A cardboard toilet paper tube to get a full roll, etc. Didn't get paid for a month and a half. That was really rough for the guys who had families there. First time I ever heard of the Soldiers and Sailors relief act.

Generally not an eggplant guy, but Matty Matheson’s eggplant Parm recipe is pretty damn good
You youngin’s sprechen a different lingo or old folks that hang around youngin’s and get infected with lingo. If not a eggplant ? Then what is it a purple prophylactic?

For once we agree. Eggplant is the worst.

And for the olds on here, the eggplant emoji ain't an eggplant. Just sayin...
I really like Japanese eggplant (they look like Paluch's emoji) sliced about 5 mm thick, pan seared with a little sesame oil, a touch of soy, grated garlic and lots of fresh grated ginger root. Damned tasty if I do say (so). That thing Evan shows...... I'll pass on. ;-)

I once made “bakon” with a special marinade and ichinban eggplant I grew… it wasn’t bacon but damn good veg approximation

My shriveled turds are home grown japanese eggplants.

How were they to grow ?
One we discuss, but never pull the trigger on. The local organic farm sells starts, so it must be ok around here...
Productive plant ?

During a federal government shutdown, only the military and Congress continue to operate. That's unfortunate. Americans would be better off if Congress shutdown and the other federal agencies continued to operate during a shutdown.
And they are working for no pay. Best not to upset people like them, right?

During the last shut down I camped in a campground that I have hit annually for 20 years, first time I had ever seen law enforcement come through. They let me stay, but awakened me with their spot light in the middle of the night.

I was kicked off the queets as I was launching my boat. Shuttle guy was going to take my truck out of the park and was standing there. I would have only been in the park for an hour or so via river. If the intent was to piss me off and further my hatred to authority and the NPS then mission accomplished.

Shutdowns always cost a bunch of money, and the clowns never get anything in return.
It is performative theater by a handful of malcontents, intent on their fundraising and media appearances.
Nothing more.

The parks are closed, some national forests are gated, so be aware if you venture out those directions this weekend. It is not good to be gated in after a shutdown.
;)

Someone gets locked in...

Monday morn phone call to work:

I am locked behind a gate due to the shutdown.

Boss: Understand. See you in a couple of days...

A week later a phone call to the boss:

I am still locked behind the gate. Fishing and hunting has been great! So nice and pleasant out here...

Boss: I am no longer your boss. CLICK!
