Dry flies on the Big Mo

I'm a lucky guy. Every July, I get to stay with my brother and his friends in Craig, MT and fish the Missouri. This year the cloudy weather created great dry fly fishing.

The 'bows and browns are big and picky. They settle into to shallow water and gulp the wide variety of tiny bugs floating by. Caddis, pmds, teeny pseudos and trikes. All stages of the hatch are in play, and the challenge is deciphering what a particular fish is eating and making a good presentation. This is the kinda place where people make the 20/20 club. I had to create my own catagory...20 inch brown a on size 19 cripple. Cloudy drizzly weather makes it way easier!

This fat brown at an EHC...

If they wind isn't too strong, I fish my Lami s-glass 8' 4 wt.

The river is jammed full of nice strong 'bows in the 16-19" range. I didn't get a good picture of a real pretty one but you can see some of the nice scenery in this pic...

As you were, WR

That place can be so fun! It can spoil a fly fisher, that's for sure. Looks like you capitalized on some great conditions and hooked some very nice fish--excellent. Are you camping?

Awesome, keep the size 20s though.. I'd rather be in the 20/20/14 club :)

Hey Matt, no camping for me. My brother's friend arranges a nice house for us the first week of July. I'm just a hanger-on with this group, but they take very good care of us. One of our group is Tom Baltz, a guide and tyer from Pennsylvania. Tom's ParaNymph pattern can be a real difference maker. You can buy them online or here's a vid...

And yes, the weather last week gave me some extra margin for error. Which I desperately need 😎

I'm off to Wyoming now for some family visits, WR
