I was going to do a small fishing report and put these photo’s in it, but left my phone in the jeep while fishing both the McDonald Creek and the Middle Fork of the Flathead River...a couple small fish, one nice cutty...

Dropped off my daughter at the trailhead of the Pacific Northwest Trail near Chief Mountain...she's backpacking 1200 miles back to the Olympic coast...

Last time I was there a few years ago, McDonald Creek was closed to fishing. Has it been re-opened? I fished it once around 1980 and caught large cutthroat, rainbow, and the biggest whitefish ever. Lots of beautiful water in that area.

Regarding your daughter's hike, how is she doing re-supply? Mail ahead boxes or shop wherever she can along the way?

McDonald is open…but there are a lot of creek closures in the park…while my daughter was getting her wilderness permits at St Mary’s visitor center, I was talking to one of the rangers there about what was open to fishing…gave me the most recent fishing info leaflet…

She is going to hike out every 4-5 days to resupply…Polebridge is her next stop…

Props on the ultralight setup and sneakers. I’m not sure I ever could’ve done it like that. I certainly was never clued into ultralight when I backpacked. I hope she has an amazing and successful trip.

Hiking footwear evolution. I used to wear Italian hiking boots that weighed over 5 pounds for a pair. From basic running shoes have evolved trail runners and then to low top hiking specific shoes that weigh in around 2 pounds but provide far more stiffness and support than regular running shoes. If it weren't for lightweight and ultra-light trail gear I would probably no longer backpack.

100%
Next month, we're heading out on a two week glamping road trip with most of the time in CO gravel biking and hiking (taking along a 5wt just in case). I upgraded my old boots with a pair of Hoka Kaha 3's where the pair feels lighter than one of my old leather boots.

Great destination, Polebridge! Are you going to meet her there? I would hike to Polebridge just to go to the mercantile! She can catch up on calories there at the bakery!! 😋
