Well, this is a kiawe tree, not a banyan…there are several spectacular banyans in Waikiki thoughThere was a famous giant Banyan tree at a Waikiki hotel when I was there in the 70’s.
Wondering if this is the same tree…

There is an interesting story about this tree. It was planted in front of the Halekulani Hotel in 1887…it fell after a storm in 2016. Instead of cutting it up and removing it from the beach, they covered the roots with burlap and cut off the damaged branches…the one surviving branch grew skyward and the tree lives on. We were commuting between Oahu and WA at that time and remember when it fell.
It may have had more to do with sandy shallow soil on the beach that the ferocity of the stormMust have been a heck of a storm. Surprised those chairs didn't blow away!!!
