Teenagers are inherently stupid....that's why the combat arms military services loves enlisting the dopes. Plus mortality results in fewer consequences (beyond devastated parents)...few are married and have children, and Suzy RC back home will soon find a new prospective mate (if she hasn't already found one!).
That stupidity (and a draft lottery number of 4) is how they got me.

This is one of the main reasons I've carried a satellite communication device while out in the sticks for years...at the very least it will save a lot of folks a great deal of time, effort and potential danger searching for my raggedy ol' carcass.

Did they tell anyone where they were going? Were they experienced outdoorsmen? Spur of the moment trip? How ill-prepared? Were they together when found? How far were they found from their vehicle? Were there any traumatic injuries?...
There was mention in one of the stories (below) they had to use a 'flock safety camera' which captured their license plate. Guessing they used that to find their vehicle and pinpoint a location, which likely means they didn't tell anyone where they were going.
