I have, for years, endured dialogs that include "big words" like "biorefugia" , These words are used to silence truthful words that us "nuckledraggers" would say because we do not know what the hell "biorefugia" even means. But hey, those guys get $75 dollars an hour.. us knucklerdaggers just want to state what we clearly see... who could ever question an expert that uses big words like "biorefugia"? Trust me folks, people that use words like "biorefugia" are in this game for the money. Truth, ecosystems, a healthy reef ...non of that has anything to do with "Biorefugia" they are looking at $75 an hour ....simple as that.

Believe it or not, I'm just getting started... A You tube video was posted on this thread claiming to expose the dark side of Sea Otters. It goes much darker than that. A Sea Otter will actually kill a female Otter, or a baby seal, and take turns raping the dead body for several days. Of course these are wild animals, but seriously.... what other wild animals do this kind of thing?

I've been to the Sea Otter exhibit at Sea World. They are so cute, but when I tried to tell people about the facts about these creatures, I was always left with a feeling that those truths were better unsaid. Is the truth about them somehow taboo? Why is that? Follow the money.

I'm imagining you at SeaWorld, telling the truth to random families and school groups.

Also, can't believe no one but @Pink Nighty likes my Limerick.

Shockingly enough, I never felt compelled to educate school groups or random families regarding the perverse sexual habits that are common in Sea Otter populations. I did attempt to educate some people that were there with me on occasion ....that never went over well. Best to just read the Kiosk and pretend that you do not know the truth.

So, Jim why dont you provide us with some facts and data to suport your belief, considering you can't listen to professionals that seem to know a hell of a lot more than you.

So please provide some data

Data shmata I don't have to listen to "professionals" that know more than me , because I have witnessed with my own eyes what those "professionals " have never seen, have never considered and are often paid to ignore. I am not here on this trout fishing forum to spread lies or promote myself, or to promote an agenda. I am simply trying to tell the truth regarding the destruction that "reintroducing" Sea Otters on the west coast has the potential of doing. Sea Otters are cute, I get that. The death and destruction that they leave in their wake is very, very real. I know that. Because I have seen it. Again I am just one voice, but I tell a truth that is hard to hear. Millions of dollars are spent every year to silence our voices. After 4 decades I am used to it, But hey, they tell you that the data says Sea Otters are great for the kelp beds....believing in that lie is much easier than trying to tell the truth..that I know for sure.

JohnB I appreciate your efforts to shed some light on this issue. The Abalone issue is imbedded in the Sea Otter issue. It is very complicated. But what is not complicated is that where Sea Otters live, harvestable amounts of Abalone will not be found. This may be a precursor for the dynamics of crab and otters in this region.
I’ve seen what effect the abalone fisherman (harvesters) have done to the abalone population in Pt. Arena…not just for the meat, but for the shell. It wasn’t a cute furry that decimated the “shell fish” there.

G_Smolt, again I have respect for your knowledge. You can throw around numbers and so can I. But I have a very specific question that I am hoping that you will address. How does reintroducing Sea Otters anywhere on the west coast of North America help any fisherman, kelp bed or ecosystem? Take all those numbers, boil them down and explain in plain English how in any way increasing Sea Otter populations will benefit mankind.
Take mankind out of the equation and you will find the benefit to the natural environment you seek. It has a way of balancing all the variables of nature.

Answer…”Civilized” Man.

(And there’s plenty of historical data to support that answer.)

Time to take the discussion offline (DM) or F2F?

I think so...

Not enough popcorn available in the stores...

Otters rock. There're my favorite critters. Even though the little villains will steal a trout off the end of the line or play slip-n-slide down the thread of a nice run I planned to fish, I'm just tickled to sit and watch them. Folks just got to know their limitations or nature will bite back. Go Bison!

Sounds like opinion outweighs scientific data, seems how they cant proved any substance!

The “I KnOw WhaT I’ve SeEn!” argument reminds me of the HI longline fishery from a couple decades ago claiming they see groups of hundreds of false killer whales out there so the incidental mortality of one or two wasn’t a big deal.

The main problem with them “knowing what they were seeing…” was that they were misidentifying melon-headed whales as FKW.

Of course they were not going to accept being corrected by some whale hugging hippies no matter what.

I must admit that this is the first time I’ve heard of flat earth level (ahem) conspiracy theories applied to sea otters.

Well there used to be plenty of popcorn, but now the popcorn aisle is like a parking lot...empty and bare. Didn't used to be this way, I know why, but fear for my life if I say anything.
