My buddy was all about those when they came out. I didn't really get it. Then I got one. I get it now. They are really a highly reliable and compact piece of useful gear.

This looks cool—FIRE!—but I don’t exactly know what is happening. Can you please explain this contraption?
It’s a Kelly Kettle, sometimes called a volcano. Basically a double walled water jacket. Load anything combustible in the tray, fill the water jacket (mine is the mid size, holds a quart), place the jacket on the tray and light it. Boils the water in 3 to 5 minutes. You can add more sticks through the top as necessary. There are videos. Made by the same Irish family for probably 80 years.
It is a cool piece of kit, especially for shore lunch coffee or drinks, but isn’t a substitute for a Jet Boil. They do make a Trekker model but it’s still bulky by comparison. One advantage though is that you can always find something combustible, wet or dry doesn’t matter, so in an emergency situation you can still boil water.

I think mine is also the Jet Boil.
For 1-2 night fishing trips I’ll get some Indian food packets and boil in a bag rice and use the Jet Boil to whip out some good fast and simple dinner after a long day of fishing.

Do you have a favorite boil in bag rice ? I've tried several and they were all nasty tasting...either a plasticy taste, a gooey consistency, a bad smell or a combination of several of these faults. And these were supposedly" name" brands

Maybe the curry masks the nasty. How about some kheer (vaccum sealed & frozen to reheat) for putting out the flame.
