The Dodgers epic 7 game swoon has featured a collapse of all facets of the game. They can't hit and they certainly can't pitch. They keep trying to make a big leaguer out of that red headed May kid but I see nothing but Bozo the Clown when he takes the mound. Starting pitchers are giving up early runs and the slumping star players are doing nothing to compensate. Despite their inept play they still have 4 game lead in the west-the division that was supposed to be the most competitive in baseball. And even with their massive billion dollar payroll the Dodgers have a losing record against teams with a winning record, a bad omen in crunch time.
The Ohtani thing seems to be blowing up in their face as the intense scrutiny and pressure he receives appears to be wearing him down. They expect him to be Superman but other than hitting some impressive home runs he is just a little above average as a hitter and seems to be chasing more than ever this year. All is not well in LaLa Land, morale seems to be bad since they released Taylor and Barnes, popular guys that are missed in the clubhouse. And the pitching coach is suspect as well, a few weeks back they had 14 pitchers injured at once and were shuttling minor league pitchers back and forth to keep a full roster. How can they have more pitchers on the IL than any other 2 teams in baseball? Dave Robert's management of the pitching staff has always been a little suspect but this year seems especially chaotic. Will they repeat as World Series champions? Quite simply, no. Other teams are better balanced and most have at least 3 dependable starting pitchers, the Dodgers don't even have one. With over 60 games yet to be played a lot can happen but by now most teams have developed a personality that will make them a contender or an also ran. The Dodgers sudden demise is baffling but is good for baseball as many thought they would make a runaway of the NL West this year but they would need to win about 66% of their remaining games just to get to 100 wins.
Some other mid season observations. Jim Deshaies of the Cubs broadcasting team is very good. The entire Mets broadcasting team is good also. The Giants have excellent broadcasters that are knowledgeable and don't resort to being statistic recitals. ESPN broadcast are the worst with too much shit on the screen and the use of every gimmick possible to attract attention, the bottom of the barrel. After years of excellence with Vin Scully the Dodger broadcast have fallen on hard times and are in about the same state as the starting pitching. A crazy quilt of announcers, none of which are very good or offer much continuity. And with the terminally boring Orel Hershieser as one of their lead color commentators they won't be improving soon. To their credit they have the lovely Kirsten Watson doing sideline interviews, she is calm, intelligent and doesn't ask stupid questions. Another ingenue I am impressed with is Taylor McGregor of the Cubs. She holds her own with the sometimes difficult Jon Sciambi, has a strong personality and is easy to listen to. Umps are still making horrible calls that disrupt the flow of the game and then look like even bigger idiots when questioned for bad calls. Please, do away with a cameraman running alongside of a home run hitter, get him off of the field. That is just ugly and diminishes the accomplishment .
