I think Dipoto is doing it the right way. At the start of the "rebuild", they loaded up on pitching prospects and it is paying off. Do I wish they had a couple more bats? Sure, but it's a pitcher's ballpark. I think they are trying to build something sustainable for the long haul. Mortgaging your future for a big name free agent can be a rabbit hole that takes years to exit.
I agree with this, small markets, and yes, Seattle is a small market team in comparison to NYC, LA, Texas/Houston, etc, have to build through the draft, then, and only then, make a smart move or 2 at the right time to make a WS run. It's what the Royals did in their run to the WS (made it to WS 7th game) in 2014 and then winning in 2015. It was costly, they emptied the farm system, then had to rebuild that; Royals record-wise are a disaster, but they have a decent young crop of players, including some promising young pitchers, so look out world, here they come!!!!
